It contains: Gator 8U Traveller case Server: X-Case 2U low depth chassis, Core 2 E8400, 6 GB RAM, 2x1TB (mirrored) Samsung F3 drives Linksys 16 port 10/100 switch Ruckus Zone Director 1000 (Thanks Net-Ctrl) Smoothwall UTM (Not shown due to the mounting brackets not yet arriving-Kindly donated by SmoothWall) Keysonic Wireless KB with built in touchpad 14" Lightwieght monitor to be mounted inside on of the lids via magnets or velcro (not decided which yet) 6 Port rack mount power supply Total cost to date = £600 approx *Apologies for the image quality. Dos_Box Posted October 16, 2009 Author Posted October 16, 2009 It means that our set-up time at BETT will be greatly reduced and we can set up and EduGeek wireless hotspot for our members as well Oh, and not shown is the IP camera that we shall be using on the stand for the week to stream pictures etc.

The problem is you need a rack mount server which is less than 50 cm in depth. We shall be runnign VMWare Virtual Server on there and powering a few thin clients off it, but as a proof of concept and as a way of showing non-technical staff what components a network should contain it does pretty well. It also means we don't have devices and cables trailing all over our stand. Some years it looks like we have had an explosion in a spaghetti factory!

Ric and I sat down a couple of weeks back and had a big chat about this. We orgionally looked at doing a 1u Atom powered server, but there are too many restrictions. Most boards will only accept a maximum of 4GB RAM, and we wern't sure if the Atom would handle many thin clients and VMs'. There was also the issue of storage in there. For a decent case that had 4 hot swap SATA 2.5 inch bays it was £424. Most other cases didn't have the space for more than 2 bays. There is also a hardware restriction level on the motherboards where they only have 3 SATA ports and no RAID. I am however looking at doing a 1u workstation to go in there. But as we are now actively spending money on BETT (2k on hotels this week, and yes, we are back in the Kensington Forum) I am watching the pennies! Oh! And Paul and I have discussed doing some rack banners as backgrounds, but time is running out and Ric (who is organsing the stand for us this year) wants to have some comfy sofas for you all to rest up on , so the stand will be a little less cluttered this year.

GrumbleDook Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I had the pleasure of seeing Russull Prue in action today and his 'Radio station in a case' is fantastic. The one he is using is only the prototype but I hope to get picks from the factory next week of teh final product. This sort of thing is really handy ... wish I could have one for work ... but I might get lynched by the council IT staff ... probably because they would want it!!!

Cools Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 looks good use to build them for MOD had Intell servers, CCVT server, AirCon, Fiber switch, some secret stuff and Parachut for high alt drops. them cases are brill for it.. them's where the days.. king credit crunch
