Joanne Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Hello everyone! Basically I left my school job and worked for a company repairing laptops and stuff under warranty (Lanway). I left there a couple of months ago and have gone self employed running a coffee van... I dund the website - Urban Coffee Co. ANYWHO! I am also helping a primary school every couple of weeks with ICT issues... I have a problem and I don't know how to fix it. There is a computer running Vista Business, it is on a peer to peer network, pretty simple stuff. I have installed ActivPrimary 3 but it will not start up... it just hangs on the screen with the pen. ActivPrimary 2 is installed on the machine and works fine. I have downloaded and installed the latest versions of the board driver and the software (3.7) but still hangs. I don't really want to uninstall Activprimary 2 just incase it doesn't help and they are left with no software.... well actually I could probably download it couldn't I? Would uninstalling ActivPrimary 2 help do you think?? Thanks in advance peeps! Joanne
elsiegee40 Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 welcome back Joanne! Can't help with your problem... sorry, but I wanted to say hi!
Joanne Posted October 15, 2009 Author Posted October 15, 2009 booo! :-P hehe thankyou, hope all is well
TRobinson Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Go to the folder where the executable for ActivPrimary is located (ie C:\Program Files\Activ Software\Activprimary3) and you will notice there is one called "ActivPrimary3.5.exe" and one called "ActivPrimary3.5D.exe" (note the "D" on the end of the second one) this is the debug run of the program, double click it to execute and you will notice that you see a notepad style window that logs everything that is happening as ActivPrimary starts up - this will show us where the program is hanging - post the screenshot on here and we should be able to advise further. 2

Little-Miss Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Hi Joanne! I did wonder where my fellow Zim fan had gone!! That debug thing is handy to know too!

Michael Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Welcome back from me too I've had terrible problems with older Promethean software in the past, but v3.7 is pretty good, although I run it on XP. Does the software hang when connected to a whiteboard? And have you tried disconnecting all peripherals - mice, printers or anything along these lines.
chilbs Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I had to create an ini file when I installed version 2 I think the info is in the help files.
HodgeHi Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 If you have a valid license for activ primary 3, download activ inspire. This has both the studio and activ primary 3 and you can switch between them as you want (requires restart of app though).
Edu-IT Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Hi! The text on your contact us page is really hard to read, by the way.
Joanne Posted October 16, 2009 Author Posted October 16, 2009 Hi! The text on your contact us page is really hard to read, by the way. Erg, I know... can't change colour of the font... stupid Office Live Editor... can't afford a proper program! About the Coffee thing... 'fraid I'm based in Burnley... so just Lancashire places really. As for Birmingham... they have an Urban Coffee shop that has ripped off my businesses name! Mine was started in 2007 and the Birmingham Urban Coffee was started in 2008!! They took my wanted twitter name! Thanks for all the welcome backs too... dunno how useful I'm going to be in helping solve problems any more though!!
Michael Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 As for Birmingham... they have an Urban Coffee shop that has ripped off my businesses name! Mine was started in 2007 and the Birmingham Urban Coffee was started in 2008!! They took my wanted twitter name! I presume you're operating as a Sole Trader then and not a Limited company, as another organisation couldn't name themselves Logistix Computer Solutions Ltd for example. I suppose you really have to ask yourself whether it has a direct impact on your business? If I changed my company to Tesco Computer Services it may get me in some trouble and probably wouldn't be authorised for obvious reasons. I know Companies House also disallow company names which contain bad language and various other criteria. Why anyone would want to do this baffles me!
TRobinson Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 As "HodgeHi" says ActivInspire is currently a free upgrade for customers who have an existing ActivStudio/Primary 3 serial number and will remain this way until the end of 2009 - so it's definately worth upgrading. Plus ActivInspire does not lockdown features or display a watermark if there is no Promethean hardware attached. There is also a Personal version of ActivInspire that is available free of charge to anyone - it has less features to the Professional version but is ideal for students to use at home etc.
bossman Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 @Joanne: Have you installed the vista version of the ActivBoard3 software as there are two flavours? We have used the vista one on laptops for teachers and it works straight out of the box just wondering if this is the case with yours. If you can't get hold of it send me PM and will supply link to download from us as long as you have a valid key it will work. :)
Joanne Posted October 19, 2009 Author Posted October 19, 2009 oooh the debug form freezes! It stops on Obtained: C:/Users/Class 1/Documents I can access this folder easily. Any help?
TRobinson Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 (edited) That's the idea of the the debug version - basically it generates a list of all the tasks the application is carrying out as it initialises and from this we can asertain whereabouts the program is hanging...Can you post the complete listing for me to review? In the meantime, can you browse to C:\Documents and Settings\%Local User%\My Documents\Activprimary3 (in Vista C:\Users\%Local User%\MyDocuments\ActivPrimary) and delete "2057AP2.ap3l", "APProfilepath3.ini" and "APSettings3.ini" then clear the local users temp folder (C:\Documents and Settings\trobinson\Local Settings\Temp on XP or C:\Users\%Local User%\AppData\Local\Temp on Vista which are hidden folders as standard) before restarting ActivPrimary My apologies if i'm teaching you to suck eggs as they say but I wanted to make sure I covered everything.
