I'm about to get into this in a week or so when time allows. I have an internet connection for myself on the network by a second network card on my workstation which is connected into the ADSL router which I can remote access any tiem I need the net but there is an upcoming need for access for each machine in the ICT suites to run clait + exams and I'd like to get a head start on it. On brief research I fancied a smoothwall dansguardian setup but I must admit I was blissfully ignoring the authentication issue :)

Anyone have any thoughts on Endian?

Big or little, Norphy?

ha ha ha. :|

I was talking about this: Endian

It looks a lot like IP Cop with some extras build in, LDAP and NTLM authentication and a content filter. I was playing with it today until a headache got the better of me.

Sorry for the bad joke :D

Haven't heard of that Endian before, looks quite promising though. Was the headache induced by Endian or your end users?

Neither I don't think although I will say that Endian didn't make it any better. It started when I got called away to look at a PC with a 15" CRT running at 1024x768@60hz and got progressively worse from there. In the end I had to go home early and sleep it off :|

I was shocked when this came out, but when you think a blood sub costs £100 a year now, it may not be that bad to say you would get Blood, Active Image and TS for (in some schools cases) very reasonable money. I will wait to see, but I have mailed them, as the schools I work for, ALL ofthem have way less than 200 users, in a few its less than 100! So its a bit big the 200 licence pack for us.

I have been looking at the pricing and as long as the product has everything it says it not too bad. The base licence buys you enough for 200 concurrent users which will probably be ample for most places.

The price also includes the black list update and the active image control as well (image filtering) and support.

So for £200 a year its not too bad compared to a lot of other products.

Blah, so what about concurrent users, when you the size of the school I use this in, the starter pack is about 10x too large! But I have had contact from them about that issue....

Any News on Censornet? :?: Their site seems to have gone semi-dormant. Forum had been down for months now read-only awaiting new Forum:twisted:

Are they keeping a low profile untill they work out a new business model. Can't find any new info.

Yep. We're trying to negotiate a decent price on Censornet v4 - they want £5 per concurrent user - on that basis even 200 users means £1000 a year. Too much for us, unfortunately.

Does cachepilot have a yearly subscription?

Maybe we should stay with Censornet v3 and hope some of the v4 features make their way into the open source version.

I can't see anything compelling in v4 as opposed to v3 - apart from the transparent authentication which everyone seems to want.

OK guys, give me a details of a current Dell machine which would run Censornet v3 - I gather it uses quite an old version of Debian Linux. Serial ATA is not going to work, is it? I used to be a dab hand at running Linux, but finding suitable drivers is going to tax me way to much now. I'm used to Apple Macs, for heaven's sake!

Cheers.

Looks we got a good deal by buying early - we paid £100 for a 200 concurrent user license for our Comprehensive and bagged an 18 month deal as a result due to the delays!
