iPhone push email (through CLEO)

Hi Guys,

 

We have just bought 3 iPhones, and want to get them set-up using push email from our internal mail server. I have a feeling that CLEO will get in the way.

 

It may sound a bit daft, but our exchange server is internal and we cannot access our emails out of school, but i want to get push set-up regardless if possible.

 

Does anyone know how to get push set-up past CLEO and everything?

 

I am very new to this and would appreciate any help.

 

This is how far i have got;

1. Allowed Outlook Mobile Acccess
   
2. Installed ActivSync Admin Tool
   
3. Put in all my settings for email on my iPhone
   

and so far cannot connect to server.

 

Please start at the beginning and i can check if i have done things correctly.

Just to clarify are these the newer iphone 3GS or the last years models iPhone 3G ?

My Iphone is setup with

 

Email = My email addy

Server = mail.domainname.net

Domain = domain

Username & Pass

SSL on (as I connect securely)

 

Not sure what/or why CLEO block?

Not done or had anything to do with exchange so the terms used are new to me.

New iPhone 3GS.

 

CLEO, is cumbria and lancashire education online, county blocking basically.

 

My domain is local, and my exchange server is on the local domain. But emails can be sent out through county mail servers etc.

 

I dont want to grab mail when it's coming in from county, but push it when it has arrived at my local exchange server.

 

My settings are as follows;

 

My Iphone is setup with

 

Email = My email addy

Server = servername.domainname.local

Domain = domainname.local

Username & Pass

SSL on (as I connect securely)

You need the LA to point mail.domain.sch.uk (or whatever) at your exchange server for all relevent ports.

If I remember correctly you can use the ActiveSync on the iPhone and it should pick up the settings.

 

Here's mine:

Email - [email protected]

Server - mail.domain.co.uk

Domain - School domain (i.e schoolname)

Username - Network username

Password - Usual password

Use SSL - On

What exchange server are you connecting to as it is different on 2007 & 2010

Exchange server 2003.

 

Just to add guys, i have not added any devices on the Mobile services area, where you can add mobile carriers.

 

This may help? Although i am unsure what to put in?

Also, i can't even get the phone set-up right to pull email from our server. I think maybe this is a certificate thing? (i havent done anything with certificates and dont know how)

 

I have configured wireless,

- put in static ip address etc

- configured to search for my domain.local.

- put all of my network credentials in as i would on any client inside our network

 

And all i get is "Connection to the server failed".

 

Any ideas fellas?

Think i need to have a word with the LA about how to allow external access into our school. Maybe have a speak with Smoothwall too, as that is the proxy server / firewall / email relay. That will probably help me get somewhere as to knowing how to get email pushed to my iPhone externally. Also teachers want access to emails from home, so i might have to configure some sort of pop3 thing, dont know yet though, will have to have a think.

Do they work with exchange 2003? Snow Leopard's exchange support is for 2007 + only. Not sure if the iPhone is earlier than that.

We have set up push email within the CLEO network. You need to submit a request for an external IP address from CLEO for your exchange server.

 

Configure your server. This helped me:

 

Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access errors occur when SSL or forms-based authentication is required for Exchange Server 2003

 

 

Basically, Outlook Web Access uses the same ports as Outlook Mobile Access. Once you can successfully access OWA from outside the CLEO network, you are ready to configure your IPhones for push email.

 

 

 

This can be quite confusing, as it needs to be exactly right.

 

Make sure your iphones are configured as below:

 

email : (username)@(school).cumbria.sch.uk

server : server external IP address. (I got this by pinging the OWA URL)

Domain : school domain (with no .local or .cumbria.sch.uk extension)

username : OWA username (with no @school.cumbria.sch.uk extension)

 

SSL: on

Thats great, thanks. So it is definately possible.

 

We are setting up the webgateway at the moment as we do not want a forward facing exchange server.

 

When we have the webgateway working we may be able to sort something out like that.
