One of the things we intend to display is video of the little darlings' activities and streaming video to lots of screens might be pretty demanding on a network. Ric I am the MD of ezeVue, and the way our software works is not as demanding on networks as you say. When a video is set up to play on any number of screens, the Media Manager software merely copies the file to the machine running the Player software, and the player plays it locally. It means that videos are not streamed from the server each time they are required, and if the MediaManager machine goes down, none of the players will fail. Thanks Paul
Mano Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I have got together a simple web page with 3 colums....down left a java applet for sport news...and also a picture section...down middle a powerpoint display with messages...and on right and rss feed to bbc etc... what i want now is to get a tv usb and have a live feed onto web, how is this done? or can it not be done?? cheers tony

That was one of the solutions I looked at... read my document and you will see that it is ridiculously expensive in comparison to the others.
sidewinder Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Ha, if I showed the head this thread I get the feeling we would be spending a lot of money on more screens and software We have a 42" plasma screen in the reception area which he is really proud of, but to be honest its embarrasing, just an amateur looking powerpoint presentation thats put together by one of the resources staff I doubt that he would be interested in news feeds and video very much but are there any solutions just for creating decent looking slideshows which wouldnt require a repackaging of a powerpoint every day?

You've got the options of either using our server (low cost) or installing on your own server. We've also got a diskless linux player (PlasmaNetix / free / open source) which will link into it. Let me know if you are interested in trying this out, I'm happy to work with you in getting your system up and running. News feeds, RSS, powerpoint, video and custom templates / html are supported. It's fully functional and yes ... F-R-E-E. It's PC based (not Linux). You're given full instructions regarding set-up & use. It can be used over a LAN or using your existing Internet connection. m25man Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 I'm about to do one, Reception, wall mounted Plasma with Mac Mini attached. Does anything, Plays anything built in everything just run a Cat 5 up to it (if I find it can't use the wireless for all I need) managed across the LAN with VNC. Sorted...

I suppose you could use Quartz composer to build yourself an RSS driven screensaver or something but you will come across the same problems as everyone else...

I am looking at how I can have a range of messages saved as an rss feed ... and the feed is on a playlist ... set to shuffle ... and it updates whenever I make a change. I had a play on Thursday and it seems to work ... now I just have to wait until the budget is finalised and I can get one for the school to really try it out.

We are looking into doing a DS setup this summer and would like other examples etc. Someone is coming in to school in a few weeks to demo the one they use (using net-top-box). If anyone has the NTB setup, what sort of costs am I looking at? Ta muchly

They use a hosted model so upgrades and updates are taken care of. They were at BETT with NEC so they must be ok. Not tied into certain hardware like others either so we can reuse old kit.

bagatelle Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Yeah, I thought it was pricey too, but ease of use might mean staff actually use it without giving me another job. We are also planning to use old kit, just buying cheapo screens for now to save cash. Management also wanted the screensaver option- more work for me to sort out no doubt. Why were you looking at hosting it? Not confident they could do it, or was hosting expensive, because we got it included as a 'bundle price', which may or may not mean we have been had.
secman Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 WWe were looking at hosting it mainly because our LEA Internet link is a bit unreliable and slow. It would not look good for the image of the school to visitors if the reception display was dropping out because of a bad internet link. It is also I beleive an ongoing subscription which our IT Manager is not a fan of. If we go for anything we will probalby look more at something like the ACTIVE Netbox (from memory) cos it can take live TV as well! Alan
