Kaspersky has an inbuilt spam filter in the internet security package.

if you didn't go for an all in one paid solution, i guess something like mailwasher would do the job

I was under the impression that using the 'all-in-one' solutions are a bad idea. I don't see much point going for Kaspersky Internet Security and then turning off the firewall etc... then using ZoneAlarm.

If I can get a GOOD all-in-one then I'm happy to do that.

I've been using F-Prot Antivirus... this seems to work but wouldn't be too sure, I did have Norton but it's rubbish, it slowed my Laptop down so much it took 10 mins to boot my desktop! I was

I remember a study of the various AV packages was done a while back (I'm trying to locate it) and Norton came out the worst for resource usage - using something like 35% of the computer's resources just to run itself.

IIRC AVG was down in the single digits of usage.

Install Anti Vir (best detection rate I have found yet on a free AV)

Wait for the nag screens to start to appear (when it updates itself) buy a two year licence for £15 on the deal from the nag screen and about half price.

I fully advise the use of AVG anti-virus, it pops up instantly when you get a virus, and I would say works just as well as any other. It updates at the very least once a day, and protects your computer system well. Don't be scared when you get a message up saying your anti-virus will expire in 30 days on it as AVG is free for life.

Where the hell are you all surfing ? (actually DONT answer that) lol

Ive not had a nasty on my home pc in the past 6years.. I use a mix on my home network of AVG free and Avast, it atleast gives one a chance to slip up... but theyve never needed to kick in and say anything...

I honestly believe if someone tries hard enough they will get their pc infected... my sister is a testiment to that.. lol

I use Avast after getting rid of Norton. It updates itself nearly every day, and every so often gives an alert about a dodgy web page. I recommend it.

I downloaded an anti-hacking package called Rapport from Natwest. It scans your pc for keylogging etc. I can't say its been proven to be good as it would be impossible to say this until i get hacked into, but I recommend it simply because natwest is part of the package which is a very good name to have behind it.

The crucial thing to remember about antivirus is not to rely on it to save you from doing something stupid.

If you browse the web using an (XP) administrator account and your browser gets hijacked, or you install a dodgy plugin, then the malware is running with administrator privileges and can completely own any antivirus you have running - no matter how good it is.

Similarly if you habitually download and install programs from untrusted sources - file sharing sites, executable files given to you by other people etc. you risk a malware strike. Ideally you should go direct to the authors site, download the file you need and then check the hash of the file to see if it corresponds. Depends how paranoid you're feeling. ;)
