EduTech Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Yeah we also make Patch Cables out of unused Network Cable! thinking of even buying coloured network cable just so it looks good in the cab rather then the old grey colour
plexer Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 you shouldn't be using solid cat5 for patch leads. Or you shouldn't be using stranded for structed cabling. If you have other metal too a few quid is better than nothing.

john Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Why not? Its not as flexible and is prone to breakages so if you bend the patch lead too much you could snap a core inside it. Its the exact same reason mains extension and mains leads are made from stranded cable and not solid.

MatthewL Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Yeah we also make Patch Cables out of unused Network Cable! thinking of even buying coloured network cable just so it looks good in the cab rather then the old grey colour We have coloured ones in most of our cabinets, they all denote different things, i.e. yellow is a phone on a none VoIP site with data i.e. pc been blue, if its a VoIP site then its blue for a pc/phone, if its a pc on its own or a printer its orange which goes to another switch, black are servers, grey are major incident lines, red is firewall to switch, green router to firewall. Makes it so much easier tracing cables and we have 3 patch panels and then a switch so we only ever need to use 1/3m leads, just got a few cabinets to tidy where people did their own thing before we set a standard
