TechSupp Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Just gave my mother a laptop and internet access...now I need to support her when she gets stuck. Whats the best (free if at all possible) solution so that I can do effectively a remote desktop session to show her how to do something when she gets stuck. She is on a wireless dongle (3G) and I have a broadband connection.
Mcshammer_dj Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Instant Housecall Free Remote Support and Free Remote Access Software not bad and allows full control
EduTech Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 another +1 for LogMeIn you could also use TeamView James.
mac_shinobi Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Team Viewer TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet Although as above logmein is great not sure how they will fair with the 3G connection though. Short of that a version of VNC
mac_shinobi Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 another +1 for LogMeIn you could also use TeamView James. beat me to it lol
Potato-Peeler Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 A little odd but msn messenger has a remote desktop service? It works surprisingly well to. Or Logmein....
SteveBentley Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 My mum's machine has a VNC server, started from an icon on the desktop rather than as a service, and one of the Dynamic DNS clients on her router so I don't need to get the IP address out of her over the phone.
Mcshammer_dj Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Instant Housecall Free Remote Support and Free Remote Access Software not bad and allows full control The real advantage of this system is that the user makes the call for help via a simple web page. This then contacts you to allow you to support the system. I use it to help out a couple of mates. Even if they remove the software it will reinstall when they go the the webpage again.
SteveBentley Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 A little odd but msn messenger has a remote desktop service? It works surprisingly well to. Not too surprising - AFAIK it's effectively just a different interface for Terminal Services/Remote Desktop
TechSupp Posted August 27, 2009 Author Posted August 27, 2009 Thanks to all, LogMeIn it is then, used it before so don't know why I didn't think of that in the first place.
NeoPlosive Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Recently discovered TeamViewer 4. It's nice and simple - saves fiddling around with any firewall configurations. Easy UI too.
Little-Miss Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 You know what i use to help my dad.....messenger! worked fine for me... Ah potato-peeler beat me to it!
powdarrmonkey Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Trust me, upload from that 3G dongle will be sloooooooooooooow (that's the ghostly voice of experience ).
