I've used OSX on Apple hardware before, it didn't persuade me to buy an Apple, nor do I feel any real desire to use it again.

 

I'll stick with Windows and Linux on hardware of my choosing thanks.

I am actually looking into running os/x on my pc since its far more powerful then most macs anyway and a damn sight cheaper. I read a post on another forum about someone who did it and his benchmarks made macs look rather poor.

That would be project 86 which is illegal afaik running a 2008 mac pro with 2 quad cores running at 2.8ghz and 2 gigs of ram and a sata 300 7200RPM hdd

 

would be good to see those bench marks - any links ?

[OSx86] My successful hackintosh install - Neowin Forums is the post/thread, not sure how verified they are but if you take it at face value he has got better performance for a massive saving (in AU)

Before I purchased it I had the choice of a desktop either built by myself or dell or hp or whoever speced out or an apple mac pro ( tower with hard drive sleds etc )

I don't want windows - no journaled filing system ( unless they changed that in win 7 ? ) , eye candy is copied from apple and I can still run windows 7 and linux anyways without faffing about with project 86 but I choose not to

OSX has a very good command line. When I use macs the first place i go is the shell - as it's the same system as other nix's so I don't need to learn their gui

Upgradable to 32gb RAM DDR2 800mhz FB DIMMS

 

and all the usual gumph

 

Great for video conversions, audio etc very fast and nippy

 

And no I didnt bring my ruler with me lol

The thing is all a mac, hardware wise is, is a fancy case (regarding desktops) which you can get from china as a knock off anyway that looks the same. EVERYTHING ELSE IS PC (except custom bios)

People say "oh but the hardware is ace and better then pc" but they dont really seem to understand inside that fancy case is a foxconn board (like dell use) with pc parts but the case allows them to charge much more for those that think its somehow better. TBH the graphics cards I have seen on macs have been very poor for the price and then it still has driver issues.

The laptops I must admit is where its a bit better for hardware quality, I do like the shell of the laptops but its still not much more then a pc laptop with a nice shell, led keyboard and multitouch pad but without the ability to do such radical things as changing the battery.

 

As for JFS, no I dont think 7 has it but with what I heard in the past OS/X still suffers from file loss anyway so its not exactly the dogs and its not like NTFS is hugely bad at crashing/losing files (even though the teachers like the blame the server...). Have a search around apples forums for vanishing files and see as long as apple has not removed the posts.

 

OS/X still is not a full 64bit os and has issues with app memory limits as well as not having half the security that windows has such a proper memory randomization (vista +)

It in many ways is mile behind windows and I dont accept the "they copied the gui" stuff either as its not a big issue as vista was not like mac osx tbh and 7 has its own unique features apple have stolen such as the aero app previews on the superbar which MS did first.

 

The reason I want to try os/x on my pc is just to have a play tbh, thats the thing apple needs to cure, a proper cheap mac which makes you think its not a remorgage level gamble to buy an OS you are not sure you will like. The mac mini is a joke and really was a rip off but I hope the tablet version coming in sep (rumoured) will be cheap, netbook cheap tbh. Thats probably one of the best desicions they could make, get you playing/loving it for minimal risk which will only lead to sales of higher end kit. I would never risk £1000 on a mac when I dont even know if I like the os. I know windows can go on it but then its just a very expensive pc.

Hardware wise yea could be better quality and faster I agree on that and I could of gone the same route as yourself with as I mentioned above custom hardware built or dell or hp or w/e but I still did not want to faff about with project 86.

That's debatable - as far as I was aware they used that from iTunes as iTunes started doing that first and then they replicated it to there finder.

 

Either way they keep stealing things from each other so that makes no odds as for files vanishing ive never had that problem since being with os x 10.4 so not sure what thats about - not to say it does not exist but just to say I have been using it for a couple of years maybe longer and not had any issues

sadly windows users will again have to wait until MS reinvent the wheel
