Its mainly about the amount of pre-orders that have been placed already.. but this paragraph caught my eye:

 

The software requires a "clean install", meaning that prior versions of Windows will have to be removed before Windows 7 can be installed.

WTF? I'm guessing this is related to something that was said in a previous thread that hinted that there was no Upgrade version of Windows 7 in Europe .. but it was assumed that you would be able to do both..

iirc it's something to do with them not being allowed to bundle IE in Europe or whatever so they have offered full licenses at upgrade cost because I don't think there are upgrade kits available without putting IE on it.

I find myself moving more over to Ubuntu these days - just using the live CD option on 3 XP non booting PCs given to me this week by various staff has got me brownie points in regards to getting the data off the PCs & then re-building them.....

When i use Ubuntu on staff machines to recover files i am usually annoyed by the NTFS drive not opening because it was not cleanly shut down. Then i have to search a gazillion forums to find the exact code that forces it to open. It's quite annoying especially as the code always differs depending on the types of drives used in the example.

 

I always find our old Knoppix live cd works best to restore stuff.

I think this is a good move by Microsoft. It should reduce a lot of upgrade or compatibility problems. Upgrading an OS has never been the best method of changing to a new OS. Starting from new will definitely give the best results.

I've pre-ordered my copy from Play.com today. From what I have seen from early releases it looks good. I plan to install mine on a VM on my iMAC.

Ebuyer wouldn't take my order, as their system records a stock level of 0 (obviously!), but Amazon took it. It did take them a little while to realise it was release day but it was available by 4pm.

The "discussions" on AMZ suggest that they are releasing the "stock" in drips and drabs, but I was refreshing the page fairly regularly for 2-3 hours with no luck .

 

Still, according to the same discussions, the German branch adopted the "first come, first served" principle and sold out within minutes.

 

If you don't want to compromise your principles for £5, Play had stock at £49.99 last night (if you want HomeP).

aye ive just ordered 2 copies of pro cost £20 more than amazon but i figure cheaper than doing it later and not much more than an oem and i get a nice shiny box

Nice to see that Microsoft have tagged onto the £300 is waaaaay too expensive for an operating system feel from Joe Public.

£100 Is the right amount for the pro package I feel. And they will sell a hell of a lot more copies to the home market\small business sector that way.

I've been running the RC as my main OS at home on my media PC since it's release. It's fast, stable and more importantly tunes into HD TV automatically. The media centre side of things is quite awesome in fact.

Ebuyer still won't take orders as they don't have stock, although they have upped their price by a penny to the round £50! Amazon are no longer listed on MS's site and Tesco Direct have been added, although it is still available on Amazon but they want £75 for Premium.

That's the post-offer but still pre-order price; guess they've sold all their "offer price" allocation. I think Tesco was on the MS list last night but £50 rather than £45.

a) desire to not be running an 8-year-old OS which has been superseded at least once (twice if you're feeling generous)

b) a desire to get the product for £45/50 and not several hundred

If you goto My Computer in the ubuntu menus and try to access the drive it will give you the code you need to type in in the dialog box, there is no need to search for it, just add sudo in front and you have mounted the drive

I remember some pop up with some code example that did not work on a couple machines but did on others. The issue with that though is the pop up itself that appears. It was not able to be copied and pasted so i would sit there trying to work out if there was meant to be a space here and there or was it just the default gap between the brackets etc... too awkward. Yeah that is probably my biggest gripe with that! its not exactly a short command either!

Just ordered my copy of Home Premium from PC World website, order taken with no problems they are doing it for £44.99 inc VAT and Free P+P, roll on October 22nd!

 

I have been playing about with the RC for a while now on a laptop and even a VLite'ed Beta version on a EEE PC and I like what I see so far!
