Dos_Box Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 (edited) In just over 3 weeks time I shall be occupying EduGeeks offices on a full time basis. The only thing is I'm missing is a workstation. What I need is a bit of a beast as I shall be running several VMs at once and will also require a large display. The machine must have an i7 processor and a minimum of 4GB RAM and Vista x64 (moving to W7 ASAP). I've set aside a budget of £1100. SO what would you buy given the chance? *It can be from any manufacturer, or of someone wants to be brave and spec individual components feel free. Oh, and I hate garish cases, so nothing that looks like a 'blinged' Peugeot 106 please. Edited July 8, 2009 by Dos_Box

Potato-Peeler Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 A dell precision perhaps? They are fairly beasty, we have a load of them in media suites. Not sure bout the i7, but theres definitely one with a Xeon. Check it out on the site?

soapyfish Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 :-( oh ok I should have read the whole post ...still its a battlestation alright
Butuz Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Oh right - you move out of schools and now all of a sudden you need an all singing and dancing I7!!!! In all seriousness, I7s have a big price premium. Yes they perform, but is it worth the cost? If your gonna be running VMs - I would suggest a HP ML115 G5 server from Servers Plus add some extra RAM and you have a seriously good 4 x 2.1Ghz Core 8GB Ram server to run VmWare ESXI on for about £200. Then spend £400 on a Quad Core SCL workstation and hey presto - all you need for £600. My 2p Butuz

EduTech Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Custom Built Computers & Custom Gaming PCs - Computer Planet My mate brought an i7 Computer from here, of the top of my head i know it included 2gb graphics card, blue ray reader/writer 2TB storage. and that only came to just under £1,100 so might be also worth getting a specification from there with prices and passing it on to a edugeek supplier. James.
Dos_Box Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 The reason I wanted an i7 platform is simply that I don't want to be upgrading in 12 months time when the Core 2 chips are getting phased out. That and I WANT one!
Edu-IT Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I've set aside a budget of £1100. SO what would you buy given the chance We can kiss goodbye to pizza at the next conference then?
