All BT customers getting free 20mbit/sec upgrade

Bloody BT ruined my nice relaxed morning with this announcement.

 

You only get it if your exchange is ADSL 2+ enabled, and you have to take out a new contract with them.

 

Still, puts pressure on the like of Virgin to lower their prices a bit for the top tier broadband packages, which I've always thought are a rip-off, however good the service.

The amount of people who'll get 20mbit on their ADSL2+ package is far less (in theory) than those of us on the 20mbit Virgin package simply because of the line quality.

 

It's interesting though to see BT make these moves.

I pay for a bundle whereby I get the following:

 

Telephone line with free evening/weekend local/national calls. (L Telephone Package)

20mbit Broadband (and I get it) (XL Broadband Package)

HD V+ Box downstairs (XL TV Package)

Normal V Box upstairs (XL TV Package)

 

Works out about £52 a month I think now.

52 pounds is roughly 689.68 South African Rands. Which is close to what I pay for my 384k capped at 3gb/month line at home.

 

School runs a 512k uncapped line for about 3 times that amount.

For comparison - I currently subscribe to:

 

BT Broadband Option 3 £24.46 a month (Inc Homehub, and hub phone).

BT Line Option 1 - £11.25 a month (inc free calls evenings and weekends)

BT Vision - Value pack, £6.85 a month (includes HD shows and the like, with movies on demand) (V-Box cost nothing, and no connection fee for me. Also included Powerline network adapters)

 

£42.56 a month + call charges during the day.

Im with Be on ADSL2+ and get about 14mb down ( could probably increase that slightly as when I connected directly using my router I managed 15mb down ) and about 1mb up.

 

Dont have tv with virgin or sky yet ( wish I did ) am very tempted to go with skys hd+ or w/e its called.

This is an important point - on cable you get more or less what it says on the tin, no vague "up to" cop out.

Well, you get what you've been throttled to, anyway.

Or if the contention ratio on the local UBR is through the roof. As cable is a 'shared' network.

 

I have a BT line however I opted to go with Be There over a year ago. They have 24mbit/1.5mbit for £18/month via LLU IIRC.

Regardless of throttling or not you can't make a BT line go faster on the ADSL2+ standard beyond tweaks in the home, filtered faceplate etc whereas with cable there is no reason for at raw level you not to get the speed advertised.

 

Throttling and contention exist on both sides of the argument of course.

Moved from Zen at £25pm for 1.5Mb to talk talk doubled my bandwidth (I live in the country quite a way from the exchange) and now get free evening and weekend calls and free broadband for £12pm as they have their equipment in the exchange.

They don't offer TV at the moment but i suspect they will before long.

 

Have just been dealing with a friends BT connection as it has deteriorated over the past couple of weeks from just short of 8Mb to almost nothing and after 9 hours one Sunday I told him to cancel the contract and go with another ISP.

Hope you don't get any problems with your BT connections all of you who have them as their customer service is very poor.

With them too. Pay around £20 for unlimited local, national and international calls any time of the day and night as well as for the broadband. Not sure of exact speeds but I think it's ~2MB which is usually okay for what I'm doing. Customer service on their support forum is usually of a high standard, I don't bother with calling now.
