DrCheese Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Microsoft confirms Windows 7 release date to be October 22nd They expect to wrap up development next month. Hopefully we'll get it before the on shelf release date like we did Vista (It was on MVLS around November, shelf release jan)

john Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Looking forward to it I think it will be fairly prompt after final build confirmation and the press of the new media goes ahead to the VL site as Vista has been not that well taken up they will hope that we will really go for Windows 7 like mad. I must admit I am keen to try it in a more enterprise environment as I think it will be a good move and must admit I am thinking it will actually run well on a good chunk of our hardware

farmerste Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 maybe its me but that seems a lille quick to me, not sure if they would have time to change anything from previous releases, but that is assuming they actually listen and act on feedback. I think its much better than vista, but you still can't do what you could with windows xp as easily.

Windows 7 has been near completion for ages so MS have been waiting for RC feedback to see if there are any big problems, as far as I can tell there aren't many so they shouldn't need to change much so It won't take long to sign it off and punt it out. DrPerceptron Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Can't say I've found any issues even with my ATI card, I ran the beta and the RC as my main OS and played plenty of games, mostly ones that were designed back when XP was the business, but they're all still good and happy.

I play Call of Duty 4 online using Punkbuster with no problems. So far I have only had problems playing Fallout 3, which gets so far into the game then crashes at the same point every time. Everything else seems to be working fine.
farmerste Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 What things just out of curiosity? for me , the biggest problem i have encountered is the inability ( though not totally ) to setup the default local user profile easily, as you could in xp. I think microsh@ft have made a 'mole hill' into a 'mountain' in this regard, which to me shows how out of touch they are with the users. Why should i have to use sysprep to set up the account i want to use for the default one???? ( and i don't know how to do that just yet anyway )

For vista and Windows 7 clients to pick up the default user on netlogon, it needs to be called "Default User.v2"
farmerste Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 that profile is then given to all users, which is no good if you have a machine setup for a particular area, hardware setup/peripherals attached, or for special needs/ equipment- human interface devices. That in my opinion is a very poor way to do it compared to setting up a local default user, which also requires much less network traffic. I realise setting up a local default user requires more work, but the results are worth it . I 'thought' microsh@ft had kinda got the message when they launched shared computer toolkit, but that idea seems to have fallen away.

Microsoft UK Schools News Blog : Windows 7 is getting closer Feel free to send me any more details on netbooks/laptops/desktops that it's running on - will publish the full list from everybody tomorrow. My thinking is that it's likely the device profile in schools will be different from a typical business, and so it'll be good to know if older devices found in schools will work happily with Windows 7 or not...

cookie_monster Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 @ rayfleming: I've been running my Samsung NC10 netbook with Windows 7 RC for a few weeks now and it runs very well, it's slightly slower to boot than XP on this hardware but that's easily offset by the sleep mode, it will wake in 2-3 seconds typically. I now have 2Gb RAM in but really haven't noticed much difference it ran great with just 1Gb RAM.
