I've just been looking through the BCS website, I've been working in IT for nearly 2 years now. Did a year as a tech at PC world (yes i know don't judge me!) and now i work at a foundry doing their IT mostly end user stuff at the moment with a bit of networking. After looking at the BCS website it says i can attain an Associate level. I was just wondering what the benefits of it are?

Cheap Software, post nominals if your accepted to be an AMBCS, legal advice I think at that level. There is a list on the BCS Site somewhere that tells you what you get for your fees. A few of us on here are members, I am and I'm an MBCS (Full Member so the one above you) and have been since last June.

I was an AMBCS for a time, but personally didn't find I got anything of benefit as a member. I actually resigned my membership after a couple of years as I was spending money on the membership fee for no return.

I thought it would help with applications etc, but in the education sector no-one seemed to know what it was!

I looked into BCS and to be honest it seems mostly a worthless CV item.

Would be interested to hear otherwise if anyone is a member!

I'm MBCS CITP - and unfortunately I have to agree - though I do keep paying just on the off chance that it will swing a job for me one day.

Another "paying for a useless cv item" experience here, plus any IT Organisation that feels the need to tell sysadmins not to put their credit card details in email correspondance is not attracting the people I want to be associated with. :)

I did look into membership of either the BCS or IET a while ago (I get exemption from the exams because of my degree, and a cheaper price for the next year!) but couldn't see the point of joining the BCS.

I know some people that have joined either the BCS or the IET (and some that joined both!) and from talking to them it seemed that in general people preferred what the IET offered.

Possibly an alternative to look at?
