we use:

 

For staff: First Name Initial and Surname - JBloggs

For students we use year of entry, form, first name initial and surname initial - 08ABC

 

Works really well for us as we can quickly identify year group problems as well as individual issues.(logging in, printing etc)

Staff are initialsurname (ie jbloggs) for network and [email protected] for email, with email alias of joe.bloggs

 

Students are initials, studentnumber.year of finish

 

ie jb002345.2012 for network

 

[email protected] for email.

 

We like this for email because if the students (all girls) are named on the website or in a newletter report (which are all on the website) no-one can guess their email address and send them unsolicited stuff.

We currently use

Although one of the previous places i attended used 3 letters of surname, forename and year of entry. Ie SmiSte08 if the name was Steve Smith entering in the year 2008

How did they cope with duplicate names ? Or was it a small school ? We have had two students with the same name in the same year, neither of which had any middle names (they were very nearly in the same form, but someone noticed).

If student doesn't have middle name on record at start of roll with school:

 

Year of Entry + Surname + Forename initial and then last letter of forename.

 

i.e. Joe Smith in Year 7 next year would be:

 

09SmithJe

 

We had an occurence on last years roll where there were two people with the same name and all we had on record was a different address/date of birth - isn't half a confusion when it comes to admin.

 

However, now we have middle names for them both instead of them being:

 

07BloggsJn

07BloggsJn1

 

They're now 07BloggsJG and 07BloggsJC, should really be Jy and Js with our naming convention but it just helps generally being able to say are you J G Bloggs or J C Bloggs.

Staff - initials as used in the MIS system.

 

Students - notional year of entry, first initial, first two letters of last name, sequence number (for duplicates)

 

So, a fictional Jane Smith in Yr 9 would be 06JSM01.

 

Her twin brother John would be 06JSM02

 

The big advantage here is that it is easy to set up an Excel spreadsheet, for exporting into our various systems as a CSV file, for new entrants.

 

Also makes it easier to delete users when the Year leaves school.

 

Each year in it's own OU (Year7 to Year13). Use 'Active Directory Users and Computers' to move them up a year every Summer.

Our email addresses are built off the usernames (simply, username@) so we couldn't use years of entry.

 

When we first got our network some 10+ year ago, I think RM's standard way of doing it was SURNAME + 2 INITIALS, i.e. jonesni, which I have never seen any reason to change. We very rarely have duplicates as even if parents choose to name their children Nick and Norman Jones, they still get different logon names (Nick and Nigel wouldn't though). If we do hit a duplicate, we just add another initial to whichever child starts second, so my fictitious younger brother Nigel would be jonesnig.

 

Other than younger (i.e. Primary) children being unsure on the spelling of their names, the issues we have are with Chinese and Arabic names - Chinese because it can be unclear as to which the surname is (depending on whether they have "westernised" the order of names), and Arabic because there isn't really the concept of surnames, and there can also be some confusion over the correct spelling when transliterated into our alphabet (we had one child where the parents had not even been consistent with spelling on the application form!).

like a lot of people for kids in most of my schools it would be 2fbloggs (year of entry first initial first 5 or surname) and then slap a 1/2/3 on any duplicates. Some schools also go with 2fred or 2fredb (ive even had tachers asking for nicknames for kids as nobody uses the kids real name)

 

staff tend to be stafffb or fbloggs or bloggsf again depends on the school

 

i do remember my username from secondary school being leave94kzsteadjonat (year of exit, surname between k & Z and 10 letters comprising of surname with firstname to fill out)

 

being primary schools i deal with (almost exclusively) in a bunch of say 60 kids per year i dont get many duplicates though i do remember once having a set of tripplets whose surnames were obviously identical but the first 2/3 letter of their firstnames were also identical (did someones sell those letters to the parents at a discount or do they just have no imagination?)

 

e-mail is handled by lea so i dont get involved but the passwords for a 7 year old are silly im not even sure complex passwords are a good idea period (in my experience they are less secure as people end up writing them down on bits of paper)

For Students we use Year of Entry/First Three letters of their first name/First Three letters of their surname, and surprisingly have had very few duplicates (we also have many Mohammads variations on names.)

 

For instance mine would be: 09THEBOI

 

Teachers have an ST prefix rather than year entry.

Students are 2digit-year-of-entry, Surname, First initial. .e.g. 08BloggsJ (Surname first makes easier to find in lists/email groups etc.)

 

If two with the same initial, then second letter of first name used - 08BloggsJo
