Its more personal preference than anything. You are right that it could be done with public folders but this may be a double edged sword. Whilst they are somewhat a bit more point and click microsoft have been trying to get rid of public folders as a whole. Which is why the public folder management console is not very powerful. That said public folders are back again in Exchange 2013 but only because microsoft have not yet got users to kill them off. If you are going down the mail contacts / distribution lists approach this would give you a lot more control and functionality i.e. moderated distribution lists so messages need approval etc. Along with the usual permissions etc. If you were going with this option the contacts would be visible by all users and you can create multiple address books and address book policies to segregate access to these, so they are distinctly separate from your staff/student address books (but it may be a bit OTT for your environment depending on what you need). The other nice functionality is RBAC (role based access control) - Exchange 2007 onwards works on permissions and role based access so its possible for you to create a role in exchange, and allow users in that role to manage contacts within a certain OU from the exchange control panel (https://domainname.etc/ecp) It comes down to personal preference, longevity and how much control / manageability you want to have.

Going to sound simple but are you able to ping/traceroute from the device to the iis servers via the dns address? and I'm assuming that the device is picking up the right dns server settings from dhcp?

As jamesfed said that should work. Depending on how specific you wanted to be you don't have to put a DNS name in at all (step 3), by setting this IIS will then only respond to requests that come via e.g. merits.internal.. If you leave this box blank, IIS will then respond to any requests from any IP address on that port, irrespective of what DNS address was used to make the connection initially.

Does anyone have any specific experience with developing an add on for Microsoft outlook. To set the context i work for a university and we have about 3 members of staff responsible for providing the service desk for all students and a further 4 for the service desk to all staff. From all the service desks we provide Telephone, E-Mail, Self Logging support options and for the student service desk face to face support. Most of the time we get a lot of the same emails and each member of each desk has there own little standardised replies to send out. I would like to develop an add on that when writing a new message you can turn off/on a pane of options that are linked to pre-defined email response text (which will be shared on a drive), so that when replying you can just place your cursor where you want it and click the option in the pane and hey presto. It sounds fairly simple in concept and i have seen some options out there (not many though) but for now with cost cutting would rather try and develop something in house Would appreciate if anyone knows of any similar software (preferably free) or any pointers in how to get started. p.s. I have a exchange 2010 installation at home and have recently setup the following above so i can access it from my works machine. When Adding the exchange account remember to do the following 1) The Server should be the Internal FQDN for the exchange server 2) enter the full mailbox address [email protected] into the username box 3) Do not press check name first of all click more settings > connections > Exchange proxy settings 4) enter the https:// of the external exchange proxy 5) set the authentication option to match what you have setup in EMC Also try using the outlook anywhere test (and if you want to set it up the auto discover test) on this site https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/ One of the things that drove me mad is the SSL certificate you use to encrypt the connection must be fully trusted on the client computer. I have a laptop running windows 7 and connecting to my home wifi network, which accesses file shares and other services running on my PC (running windows server 2008 R2) The PC provides DNS, DHCP for the wireless network. Occasionally this laptop will not be able to access the PC, through any means - it fails to ping or nslookup, despite other clients being able to. The PC its self is able to ping other clients but not the laptop. Making me think this must be a client side issue, strangely after a indeterminable amount of time the PC 're-appears' and everything works as normal. I'm not sure why this is happening and short of reformatting this laptop (not that i mind) but i am more curious to find out why its happening.

Yeah it does seem to alter with daylight savings time, and i agree it is odd it happens at a certain time most nights. I am sure it happens every night but I've not been looking to spot it before. Usually what happens is the sound goes but you get the odd millisecond of sound, and the picture gets distorted until eventually the signal goes - it happens on all the channels, When i look at the analogue channels they get plastered in static (so you can see parts of the image) but without sound. If i watch the signal strenth on my TV it goes rapidly up and down but after about a minute or 2 its back to normal. It's one of them things i have noticed for a while and been puzzled about, one thing that has been suggested is for Economy 7 as some places use radio signals to control the timings. (which according to wiki is sent though the BBC Radio 4 198 kHz Frequency)

I live in the west midlands (specifically Coventry) and i think this may be a local thing. Every night at around 23:33 or 23:32 my TV reception gets distorted on both digital and analogue services. It seems to of been happening for years from what i can remember, and it affects all the pc's in my house. I was just curious to see if anyone else has this problem in there area's or any clues as to what it is. There was a point when it happened at about 5 to or 10 to 10, so you know just when the end of that drama you have been watching for the past hour for months comes to its twist conclusion and it goes, and you despair. p.s i have IT on the brain, post title should be TV Reception at 23:32 / 23:33, If any mods feel like changing it would be appreciated

Hi There is a program called ADModify.net (which can be found here: ADModify.NET is here! - You Had Me At EHLO... - Site Home - TechNet Blogs or on codeplex).I have not used it before for the changes you need to make so i can only suggest theoretically, so it may be worth just trying it on one or two users first. This should help you: Select 'Modify attributes' Select your domain in the domain drop down list Select a Domain controller in the Domain controller list Then alter the filter options, i.e. just users Click the arrow to start searching - This will then show you your domain so you can browse through and select the OU's When you select it, you can then add it to the list, which will then copy over all the users ldap paths to the pane on the right. When all the ou's / users are in the right pane you can select specific ones to alter or select all (via the button) and press next This window is similar to the user properties dialogue in ADUC, and you should see email address's and from here remove the domain names, unfortunately you can only remove one address at a time. Just put the address to remove in the same format as it describes at the top. I have used this tool on exchange 2003 myself in the past so it should work. Good luck and hope it helps

Very nice, its a lot more lightweight than some of the others. I used to use TriDcomm to view file usage graphically with the added advantages of it being a file manager. I would be interest to see how this tool evolves in the future.

Hi Earlier today i think my external hard drive finally gave up the ghost, for a while now it has only operated at USB 1 speeds (because the drive controllers had died on the device) and now when turning it on it whirrs up like usually, but then makes a dull 'thud' sound and stops. Anyone know of an easy way to recover data from this device for when i replace it with a new external drive. (It is an Iomega 320GB Ext USB HD) p.s. I'm thinking of getting a Hitachi 1TB Simple Drive (LS-1000-EMEA) if anyone has any experience of these?

Within the various diskeeper registry settings there is an option to enable controller logging, once this was turned on i was able to see what diskeeper is doing. It would appear for each of my volumes it is logging the following when i want to perform a manual defrag. 02/17/10 15:54:04 1 F: NfsManTveExDfg 0x00000000 Cancelled due to no battery/vss/low battery 02/17/10 16:16:44 2 G: NfsManTveExDfg 0x00000000 Cancelled due to no battery/vss/low battery 02/17/10 17:14:00 0 C: NfsManTveExDfg 0x00000000 Cancelled due to no battery/vss/low battery The strange thing is that i have removed vss from the drives and checked all battery backups (and turned off diskeepers power management option) and still no change. Think i may have to ask the nice people at diskeeper.

Hi, Is anyone here trialed or using diskeeper 2010. I am running it on a small collection of servers but im having a few issues. After i have installed it it works fine when i try and do an on-demand defrag. Once i have restarted the machine each time i press the manual defrag option i get the message 'The defragment option your requested failed to start on G Drive (G:). For more information refer to the diskeeper help and windows event log' and it seems to be happening on all volumes, i have checked the eventlog and there isnt much in there. Occasionally i have errors saying that it failed to start the defrag engine on drive x, looking on the diskeeper website it says i should alter the file permissions to allow administrators and system full accessto the drive, which i have done. On a side note i occasionally receive EventID: 11, Source Disk errors 'he driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0' I have ran chkdks /f on all my volumes before windows starts, and checked the drives using teh manufactures smart diagnostic tools which say that the drives pass. Has anyone else had this problem, before i try it on another machine and/or contact diskeepers trial support.

I am currently shopping around for a new monitor and im not sure what to do really. Although i have noticed it seems increasinly harder to find non widescreen monitors.

Hello I am thinking of purchasing a surround sound system for my pc, In addition i am planning to buy a new TV. I have cables to connect my pc to my tv for watching dvd's and playing games, and naturally i would connect the surround system to my pc. I was wondering if i could get some cables to connect my tv to the surround sound system. So i could swap between the 2 by swapping the cables over?

Hi I have been using a Digimate 17'' monitor (Model: L-1721) which i discovered had a 3 year warranty only the day after one of the integrated speakers stopped working, that was back in may this year. I come home at the weekend to find that it wont power on because the casing and socket for the power adapter has became worn down, but with a bit of poking with a magic screwdriver presto it works. I come back today to find that it the monitor started going of and on rapidly indicating a power issue. So i dismantle it and do some soldering to no avail, at which point it has turned out the adapter lead for it has been degrading its voltage gradually and now will not support my monitor, yay. So a purchase i could really do without a new monitor, I'm thinking of getting a Fujitsu Siemens L3190T, we have the larger 22' versions at work and they seem great. Was wondering if anyone has had any issues with this monitor (FUJITSU L3190T 19"TFT Widescreen 1366x768 5000:1 300cd/m2 5ms VGA Speakers W/Mountable Gloss Black 3 Years Warranty - Ebuyer). Secondly if anyone has used lambdaTek or ebuyer and which would they rate both with warranty information and ease of returning goods. (I'm not a pesismist, honest) Cheers,

As you probably all know the larger the network the more servers, the more servers more automated tasks to perform At the moment i have a rather poor excel file that i use to record the day and times that maintenance tasks are scheduled. E.g Backups Volume shadow copies Defrag Exchange Database maintenance Exchange Mailbox Maintenance Scheduled AV Scans Backup Jobs DB regeneration (copying live to development databases each night) I was wondering if anyone had a decent program to record this information. I would consider adding an extra calendar in outlook to do this as that would ne near perfect. Although their are issues with accessing it quickly and easily for multiple users. Any ideas would be great

Just got over something (no idea what) but it lasted around 3 months going from sore throat, cronic cough to the odd snotty nose and sinusitis, it was a wonderful experience, and my doctors were semi useless about it too. Hope all the ill people get better soon
