  1. I have tried changing the channels numerous times in the past and to no avail. It usually occurs if im using alot of the bandwidth between my pc and the router. Which could mean its my pc, it just seems strange For instance today i rebooted my router, and my pc connected to it fine when it came back on. How ever the connection speed was 18mbps, it was also at this before i rebooted the router. After repairing the connection on my machine the speed went back up to normal. I Believe i am currently using the latest possible belkin drivers for my card aswell Adam
  2. My PC at home connections to our wifi router, using a belkin 54g desktop card. My router is configured with WPA encryption, no limits on connection speeds, and is mac address filtered When this pc is connected it has full excellent or very good connection strength running at 54mb/s, and this pc remains on constantly as i have one or two shared items running from it. How ever over time the connection speed drops, and occasionally the signal strength hits low. I am currently using the best channel that i can for my house, and after repairing the connection it goes back up to full speed. I find it strange that this happens, all power save options on the card are turned off, and i havent yet managed to isolate a commonality between the times this happens, admittedly the signal doesnt drop horrifically badly sometimes it goes to 18, but the lowest can be 11. To fix it i just repair the windows connection and it works fine Any idea's? (not sure if this should be in networks or hardware threat)
  3. I have been fiddling around and had no joys as of yet How ever i have noticed that as i use MSSQL server for CMIS the concat is called differently, You put a '+' between the two strings or expressions to concatonate For example (SELECT (LEFT('ABC',1))+ (SELECT LEFT('WXYZ',2)) returns teh value 'AWX'. i think its just we are not sure how to refernece the fields in cmis properly, but im not entierly sure.,
  4. "RM are still behind the times, while most education software runs like on steam power, RM's is like a clunky horse drawn carrage." "The 5th horseman of the appocolypse, the disgrunted IT techie and his noble steed prepare for SIMS upgrades." "Next time at christmas, pull fiber cables between friends, you can be really amazed at what you find, plus we now know how they work" "Something seemed suspicious when the head said his new line manager was a little horse."
  5. I wasnt specifically given a why, how ever i am guessing as we are a university, all our systems are linked together by the username, so the code for lecturers is their username. Additionaly as most lectures names are quite long, i believe the registry thought if initials could be used it would make things slightly easier, and look better on the timetables.
  6. When making a timetable in CMIS, and you can alter the cell style, altering what information appears and so on. Is their any way to make an expression that shows the initials of the lecturers rather than their full names or codes? Cheers
  7. Annother approach if using IIS on windows server is called hostheaders. As you can only have one website running on one port, you can use hostheaders to run the website on the same port, but alter the address used to access the site. (not sure if that makes sense, example below) Basically if i have a server and its FQDN is server.mynetwork.com. DNS record is server.mynetwork.com = 192.168.1.1 server is hosting 2 websites. Website 1 runs on port 80 and website 2 runs on port 8080. So accessing mynetwork.com would return website 1, and accessing mynetwork.com would return website 2. In IIS you could alter website 2, so that it runs on port 80, but can only be accessed when requested from mynetwork.com. Aslong as their is a DNS entry either A or CNAME for site2.mynetwork.com pointing to server To do this open inetmgr, under websites right click one and select properties. On the 'Web site' tab, click advanced Click Add in that window you can specifiy an IP address that it will use to listen on, the port it will listen on, and the hostheader where you put what domain name or address will get this site. In the case of my example for site2 it will be IP = (All Unassigned) and port = 80, Hostheader = site2.mydomain.com. (It can be done for ssl aswell) Not sure if thats what has been done, but as you mentioned it seemed like he did it through dns, the only other thing i can think of is again srv records, but browsers dont use them
  8. I have had a few issues in the past where when publishing an application it installs for the user logged on (which seems a good idea), how ever some packages i have used install the shortcuts just in that users start menu and desktop, (again fair enough, although even altering the ini files or running it as an all user install doesnt work). But then when i have had another user on that machine who is entitled to use the same program when they try and instlall it, it winiges it is already installed. For instance i have 2 people who user our financial systems, but they dont always use the same pc, they seem to opt for a find one thats free in the office type idea, and so soemtimes they have to install software, sometimes they end up using the same machine after each other and so on. it does seem abit silly, but they are beencounters.
  9. Does anyone know of a program, open source preferable, Although anything that will do the job. Im after a program that i can use for software distribution and deployment in a small active directory domain. I have used group policies but i find it annoying that i cant publish an application to a machine, i can only do it for a user. I have trialed SCCM and it worked on this but it was abit of a pain because i already have a place where i store my software and when i added it to sccm it copied it to a deployment point which seemed pointless having multiple copies of the same program. Although i said domain above i dont want it domain exclusively ability to link into active directory will be nice, but i also have a few non domained machines that i wouldnt mind being able to manage. Any Suggestions Adam

  11. Hi Before i try and ask my lea for the installable release which i believe to be February 2006. Is anyone else able to sent me or upload somewhere the cd image so that i can download it. The capita one appears to either not be available or is just the update main release. Thanks
  12. My supervisor did this, i spend hours trying to sort my pc out afterwards, with all the evil security bugs. realised he had deleted the default user profile. I just coppied it from another machine and it worked fine:D
  13. I just thought they seemed tasteless, (salt and vinegar) dont think they were low fat, but hey im all for doritoes and pint at the pub with the quiz on sunday. Or even a chance meeting with the chrisp legends of mccoys or walkers sensations:

  15. I got some weight, and my family deciding to tell me that i have. Its not my fault, its all this chocolate, and i suppose eating subway for a whole uni term doesnt help. Still ill be walking to work for awhile now.
  16. Im sorry for anyone that has contracted the sore throat, its either the nasty students, or my sister using me as a proxy. unfortunatly their are no real anti-virus products to counter sisters, i mean nod32 does everything but not sisters, Adam
  17. Wow, this got a huge response. more than i was expecting im sure most of your cures work. although the hacksaw idea does seem like it may cause further health complicaitons. still i have noticed that a common cure is alcohol, and so i occasionally sip my vodka. but not at work:(, still i am off into town tomorrow, for a drink or 40. so that will atleast solve it for a small period of time. the alcohol may even kill of the bacteria. damn my sister for bringing in a cold to the house.
  18. I live in coventry, and work at its respective university. and when i got home i could see the smoke from my bedroom window. see the picture. that was taken after the smoke had lost its very very think black look. but walking home from work yesturday at about 3:50 along the hollyhead road, i must of seen about 20+ fire engine's. link to picture: http://www.a-simmonds.co.uk/publiccontent/DSC00310.jpg Adam
  19. Anyone got any interesting methods to remove a nice and sore throat, preferably free. It may clear up by the time a post comes back. but either way it may be entertaining
  20. Good News. Found some printed manuals in our server room. Plus the previous bloke came in a few days ago, and so i got some pointers and then the usernames and passwords to serco that i needed. He even had his own little notes on cmis with the manuals, ie how he used it or added things into it. So not so much of a deep end now. Thanks for your kind offers and if i ever need help ill know just where to look. SimAd
  21. Hi Everyone Just been thrown into the deep end, im having to manage CMIS while one of my work mates is away, only thing is he doesnt seem to have any manuals or any usernames and passwords lying arround, and as this is long term it could be interesting. If anyone could email me some manuals for CMIS, well im not sure exactically which ones i need, we are licensed for Booking System, Examination Scheduling, Student Fitting, and Planning matrices. So any for these and the basic how to set it up, and get it running would be useful If people are willing to email me some, pm me and ill provide my email address.
  22. I did my 2 week work experience at a University's IT department (helpdesk). Basically i served staff and students with helpdesk problems, and did pc maintenance ie, helping move monitors round buildings. pc checks. Which was log on, any spy ware?, check add remove programs for something that shouldnt be, check internet works, check it can print, and so on. Spend a day with Operations who look after the running of the servers and users, so looking at network structure, and doing odd simple management jobs. Spend a day with Infrastructure, who setup servers and cables, looking at the cabling how the network works. It was a very enjoyable 2 weeks and productive as i am now employed by said university, with them paying for my degree, when i finish alevels this year.
  23. Wow, thanks for that=. I didnt realise that the staff module was the personnel one. I manually ran persynch and it solved the problem. Thanks alot folks i do have one more problem which is completely different. So i will do another post when i get round to it
  24. would really appreaicate it, i thought i would ask people on here first, just to see if anyone knows, plus as its on here now if it gets solved it may fix the problem for other people
  25. would the lea code/name be something that could cause the problem
