cookie_monster Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Looking into a budget NAS solution to store music and video on, would it be possible to use openfiler to create an iSCSI target that can be shared through a windows server so I can use windows permissions or is there a feature within Openfiler that will allow this functionality.

plexer Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Openfiler can use AD to define who can access a share but otherwise yes you can do what you've suggested and then use ntfs permissions on it when it's mounted on the server as it behaves just like physically attached storage. Ben

The forums are also hilariously bad. The product, on the other hand, is good and reliable. We use it for the second D in our D2D2T system.

The bloke I spoke to hinted at a fabulous new version.

OverWorked Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Sorry for hijacking this thread, but can anyone recommend suitable hardware for running OpenFiler on? That's without spending a fortune. I'll need it for images of virtual machines, running on VMWare ESXi on other hardware.

NOT .. freeNAS does all this with a smaller drive foot print.. or run it off USB memstick 1gb or 512 MB.. and keep all your drive space free. i like tham both .. but just remember you will never get max speed out of Free NAS or OpenFiler over you network..
