Server names - what do you call yours?

If you ever want to start arguments in the office or have long periods of silence that you want to break but you just don't know how.... name your servers after Transformers! :-D

DS9 etc

We use function + assit No I.E.

 

SV-000001 for servers

WS-000001 for workstations

LT-000001 for laptops

PR-000001 for printers

 

Etc..

We use site + 3 letter function + incremental number

 

LN1ADS01 = london office/active directory server/01

BS3BAK02 = Boston web domain/backup server/02

 

boring, but means you can see what each does and where it is very easily

That, despite its boring nature, is the best way as anyone can work it out without a handbook. My new Servers are called things like Exchange, SQL, Eportal, DC-01 etc

but then thats boring when people walk into the office they can understand what you are talking about a little better. with female names like may enid etc people look at you as if you are totally crazy when you say o dear enid just crashed, or has may got problems!

We are {school initials}-{role}-{number}

XXX-DC-01

 

but I am thinking now names/elements/norse sound like a good idea to make it more obvious to staff. Lets face it some staff will see "error with XXX-DC-01 connection blah blah" error and not realise the importance of the server name but if they say saw "error with MANDY connection blah blah" some would have to be curious and at the very least realise its not some computer error code hmm I wonder.....

I love boring descriptive - does exactly what it says on the tin - names for my servers.

 

For intance you can all probably guess what each of these servers do -

 

Storage1, vhost1, vhost2, vhost3, vhost4, dc1, dc2, dc3, dhcp, staracc, eclipse, spiceworks, appserver, printserver, printserver64, etc, etc, etc.

Surely you would have to use names of current staff an when they leave change them to new ones to add to the humour value?

I'm on a jaunt in NZ for a year or so. I started naming the servers after local ski fields (fox, dobson, roundhill, ohau). I always wanted to be at a school where they close early to ski and that starts in a month.

 

The school is tiny (<200 kids) so the four local ski fields will serve for now...

The thing that made me laugh when i moved our print server from a similar way to the way you have it named was that as the server was called debbie everyone kept thinking we had renamed there printer debbie!!

Microsoft will be after you seen as they use Ski Resorts for code names, AKA Windows Whistler, Longhorn etc....

I tend to keep my server names simple, examples: XXX-DC01, XXX-MAIL01, XXX-SQL01, XXX-FILE01.............you get the picture!

We're boring here, XXX-DC-01 type structure. The older servers were all by planets - we had all of them from Mecury - Pluto. But for some reason a previous NM decided to avoid Uranus. Can't image why...

We've just got a new naming system, we name them sequentially and categorised according to their role... so any server that starts nsg-vs is virtualised and nsg-ps means a physical server. Then roles are ps (print server), dc (domain controller), fs (file server)... and then a number. So say for example we were setting up two virtual gaming servers we'd call them nsg-vs-gs01 and nsg-vs-gs02. There's not much call for that sort of thing in school though so I doubt it will happen.

We've got ours named after fruits. APPLE, ORANGE, PEACH, BANANA, KIWI, PLUM, PINEAPPLE, LEMON etc.. etc...

 

In fact we're looking for a name for our new Exchange server in the summer, any ideas?

 

what about watermelon cos it's big like the RAM exchange uses?

The trouble with having a Miranda server is that you'll always be paranoid that some of its data will kill all the other data and then roam around the network attacking innocent packets as they travel between servers.

 

I really must find out who has my Firefly dvds, I miss them!
