  1. im also planning a move from smoothwall to fortigate devices this summer so would also be interested in this althought we are also going to implement lightspeed as well.
  2. I currently reviewing our broadband supplier and firewall/filtering device as they are up for renewal in a few months. Currently we have Virgin Media with 1Gb/1Gb line and 2x Smoothwalls running in failover plus also using their cloud filtering and also have Netsupport School Cloud software. Im thinking about a new line 2Gb/10Gb plus 1Gb/1Gb for failover. Im considering moving away from Virgin as service & support is bad at the moment and BT are easiliy undercutting their prices. Im struggling to decided what to do about the firewalls & filtering. I have a price from Smoothwall for an S15 appliance but not fully convinced this is best way for future especially if school grows and needs to look after more schools. It has been suggested to use either a Fortigate or PaloAlto box and then use Smoothwall Cloud Filtering to protect devices in & out of school keeping with the Net Support offering to help pick up on phrases being typed in Word/teams etc. We have approx 500+ devices using the web in school and majority are InTune registered. There are also a number of school devices that also used in the home environment that still need to be protected. BT at the moment appear to be offering a good 1 stop shop for the whole soultion. What are other schools using and what would you recommend?
  3. I have recently been looking at Microsoft storage spaces as a Dell partner has recommend it over the traditional San storage for hyper-v. We are currently looking at renewing our server environment and replacing all servers with two new hyper-visor hosts and creating a whole new virtual server environment. We have been looking at the traditional method of hosts, fibre switches and san for shared storage. Has anyone taken the plunge yet and used storage spaces instead of the old traditional methods? To me it is looking more cost effective using the new system but it also looks too good to be true. Is this tech going to be the next VHS & Betamax war and if you choose the wrong one you are stuck for years with failing support? It would be interesting to hear other peoples thoughts
  4. I have a user account in school that keeps send spam emails. I have checked Office 365 and cannot see a way of blocking this users. I suspect that a machine onsite may be compromised by need to find out where the user last logged into. Does anyone know an easy way to find out this info? The PC's are Win 7 & domain is running 2012 logon servers Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.
  5. I have setup a remote desktop server running server 2012 R2. On this server I have installed Sims & Finance onto this server. Sims runs ok but when I run Finance I get a message saying that the Crystal Reports is missing and we cannot produce any reports. The administrator account gets this message. I have run all the correct FMS installers & have re-run the FMS Application setup plus the infrastructure installer. My users can login remotely login ok to the session & run the software but they also get the error with Crystal Reports Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong?
  6. Thanks for help the akeeba module worked well & we were able to backup all current website
  7. We have a lancs.sch.uk dfes style DNS name & want to keep it. It has been a hassle trying to get a copy of our DNS zone & also get the ip DNS tag released to Virgin media. We have now managed this but what a hassle trying to get all info I needed as could not call anyone plus all old IT has been one connected! I have now also found out that county have not altered their routing for email to us so any lancs school who is sending us mail it having it bounced. Nice of them to let me know we had to request an extra change. One connect has now got so impersonal and even less flexible for schools than before.
  8. Currently our school website is hosted by lancs county council (one connect) & we use joomla. I can download site data via FTP as we are moving provider so are going to host this ourselves. Does anyone know how I can get access to the myphp so I can download the database file associated with our site? Emailed one connect but not getting any joy.
  9. We just signed up with virgin with 200mb & adsl failover backup line for £12k a year on 3 year deal. Thus was direct with them. Now just need to get all correct info off one connect what a pain that is
  10. I have just checked our speed today. We used to get towards 75 on speediest.net but today only getting around 20. Has anyone logged a call with OneConnect?
  11. Has the Admins Nasty File Search Utility died now? Can anyone suggest a replacement that works on server 2008? Want to easily weed out music & games from pupils areas and the ANSFS was quite good at this.
  12. I name all our servers after space ships from the star trek series. Enterprise Voyager Defiant DS9 etc
  13. Looks like there is a known random fault that only effects some machines using 2008 & 2008 R2. Spoke to MS tech Rep who gave me the following solution. When I did the tasks all worked fine straight away. More Information: ================= Starting from Windows Server 2008 onwards, we won't wait on automatic services startup to load explorer.exe Automatic Service startup process carried over in the background while user logon process continues. So we get to the desktop quickly. In this case we are waiting for http.sys driver load and http waiting on cryptsvc for startup. Resolution: ========== To resolve this issue: Set Cryptsvc as DependOnService on HTTP driver. HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Serivces\HTTP and create following value. Name: DependOnService Value: Mult_sz Click DepenOnService Set CryptSvc on the value. Then reboot the server.
  14. Server appears to have installed updates but now taking ages to log on as admin plus not all services running correctly. Not sure what the update is but it appears to have completly messed up this server!
  15. When I last attempted to boot into safe mode it looked like it finished the updates and re-booted server. Server then said updates not installed correctly and it was un-doing the updates. I thought great, so left it to it. Just been back and server appears to be hung still trying to reverts the installed updates. re-started server again to attempt to get into safe mode. Get same message again attempting to un-do updates. It is just sat there for ages but does not appear to be doing anything. At the start of the process I get drive activity but after a while it appers to stop. Going to have to wait this one out to see if it eventually wakes up and finishes what it is doing.
  16. I don't think this option exists in server 2008 unless it is hidden somewhere! I did boot to safe mode and attempted to un-install the last few windows updates but this has not made any difference
  17. My exchange server which runs on server 2008 needed to re-boot after installing some windows updates. So as you do I let it as it is the hols. The server goes throught the re-boot and then get to the usual screen saying it is completing updates. It sticks on update 3 of 3 and sits at 0% and does not budge. We had a test server do this a few months ago and we just put it down to the beta software we were using at the time. We had to re-load the os to get it resolved. Don't want to do this with my exchange box. Does anyone have any ideas?
  18. Do you still have the laser toners for the Dell 5100 printer? If so what colours and how much do you want for these? We use serveral of these printers in school.

    Foundation Schools

Did anyone get to the bottom of all the small print and clauses out the foundation status? I'm trying to work out if a school adopts this scheme are they forced to adopt the BSF rules and take on the out sourced ICT procedures? From what I could see if a school opted for foundation they did not need to apply the BSF rules unless that school asked for govenernment/LEA for funding to develop & improve the buildings. Can anyone shed any light on all these complications or has anyone already gone through this and can offer help & suggestions.
  20. We do not have any vlans setup on the network. Looking like it may we the switch at the core of our network which we replaced 3 years ago to a new HP chassis solution. Talking to HP at moment to see if we are correct. We take a printer and plug it in to another switch away from chassis and all is ok. Plug port back into chassis then printer errors.
  21. On Friday night we experienced a problem with a lot of external network cameras on our LAN went offline. Came into work yesterday and discovered printers would not function from our printer server. We also discovered other TCP/IP devices on network will not function. You can ping them and get response but software will not connect to these devices. Re-booted main server switch in server room then mail server stopped being contactable. It could not ping anyone or receive pings from anyone else. Put mailservers lan card onto dhcp adressing and it got an ip address but still cannot ping or be pinged. Ended up adding new LAN card to mail server and assigned that a static IP and can now be pinged and send pings. Mail in flowing internally. But we still appear to have issues around our site with TCP/IP. Some devices work and others dont. An example would be that if a network printer has a LAN connection & direct connetion to local pc. Local pc cannot printer direct to printer until lan cable is removed. We have tryed all sorts of things, disconnectiing fibre links, turning switches off etc, but still parts of network apper to be broken. Can anyone offer any other suggestions?? Please help we are scratching already bald heads and losing more hair trying to resolve this one. It's as if there is a faulty device on the LAN but don't know how to find it!
  22. we use dell colour lasers. They have been great over the past few years. I know they are re-branded but not sure who makes them.
  23. F1 coverage is great on BBC with no ad breaks. Good to life after racing for DC as a commentator although not too impressed with Jordan. Great to see another brit winning races. Hope Brawn can win the title this year, or McLaren. It will be good see both titles come to the UK.
  24. We use Sims here for most thing apart from the reports which we then use a custom built application based around a filemaker database. For attendance we use a Sims gold partner called Vericool. This allow us to do biometrics based registration. This system works well and drops all marks into Sims. Also has modules for SMS message, late system for reception plus cashless catering.
  25. Have you looked at The buy.at affiliate network We use it at school. When someone visits one of the web pages from our buy at page we get commission on that sale. One example is the National Trust. If a new member signs up from our page then we get £20 commission. They are not all as good as that one but have a look.
