jcollings Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 I think it would have worked better if they had shown them back to back. I not sure I did like the twist at the end even if a little bit odd. So which reality is correct one them or us? Russ They repeated them back to back on Easter Monday, which is when I caught them. Thought they were pretty poor myself but then I thought the series itself got worse towards the end.
localzuk Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 I think the differences with the new episodes were that: a) there was no laughter - it made the show seem like there were awkward silences b) the actors have matured, so it seems unrealistic that they'd be making the jokes they did c) part of the fun of the originals was that some of the acting was poor. Look at Craig Charles and his acting now? He's superb. But that removes a little something from the show I think. d) the writers had tried to be too clever. A series of twists and turns is all well and good in a sci-fi movie, but in a three part series it makes it difficult to get drawn in, and to feel a part of the action. e) they try to be too serious, whilst at the same time trying to shoe-horn slapstick comedy into the show. We have scenes with crying, followed shortly by them being hit round the face with squid tentacles... f) what was the point of the new woman? other than for 'cleavage factor'? She barely said a thing, and then unceremoniously was killed off? Seemed pointless. Now, personally, I'd love to see a series that was more serious - along the lines of the novels.

I don't understand why they didn't show it to a special audience prior to showing on Dave. It would of made it so much better. It was a shame there was no Holly too. It's interesting how it ended as I believe it's still open to future episodes. I like channel Dave a lot, but sometimes I feel it is a bit cheap in terms of production/presentation compared to other channels. I don't know how much input they had on the new Red Dwarf but it definitely wasn't as polished as the original series.

I swear in the 1st episode it looked like Craig Charles was going to crack up when the other characters were reading their lines. The plot was non existent. The crews immediate acceptance that they are in a TV show in the 21st century, would you be as quick to believe you were actually from a play in the 17th Century? A complete rip off of Bladerunner. Only in the 3rd episode was there any hint of genius and that was due to rehashing the despair squid storyline. D- must do better!

It's crazy really. How big/popular to you have to be to get proper funding? Red Dwarf was and still is one of the most popular comedies around even after 10 years.

It should at least have some internal logic, they have encountered a despair squid before so they should have guessed that before the 3rd episode. The whole thing was obviously thought up to get them back on earth, promote the channel dave showing repeats and boost DVD sales. The rest of the plot was an afterthought. The blade runner pastiche was not funny, it only highlights how lazy the writers are that they could not be bothered to fill their time with anything new or original. If they had gone for a parody of some other Sci-Fi (terminator?) as well throughout the show then maybe it would have come off better. What made red dwarf great was it's inventive writing yes low budget but with quality comedy and ideas but this was just low budget rubbish. PS If anyone has not seen Bladerunner yet, go and watch it! Criticism in terms of expectations means democratic judgment over the suitability of a subject for the intended purposes, as opposed to the authoritarian command, which is meant as an absolute realization of the authority's will, thus not open for debate. However all interpretations are subjective projections and have no inherent meaning.
