Convert a .MOV to something compatible with Powerpoint and Vista out of the box

This has probably been asked before, and will be again.

 

Is there an easy (,free) way to convert .MOV files created by a digital camera to an .MPG file, or something that Powerpoint 2007 (or 2003) and Vista (or XP) will play, out of the box, automatically, with no hassle?!

 

Currently, VLC will play the files a bit jerkilly, Media Player doesn't want to know and powerpoint shows a black box. I guess I'm missing a Codec or two. That's probably fixable, but I'd rather have some way of converting the files though, rather than having to install the Codecs on several hundred computers.

You probably want mwv format. That will work with Media Player.

 

Software to convert i would use Handbreak - HandBrake

 

Its free and dead easy to use.

Cheers folks I knew I could rely on you lot

 

downloaded and installed all three - in the end I used Media Converter which is dead easy to use and even did a batch conversion so I could do all 104 files at once. Brilliant!

 

Head of PE is now inserting the videos into his presentation.

Thirded for Super. No idea why the website is so rubbish; it's the kind of thing you expect when someone's trying to sell you something but they're not!

 

A useful tip is that Super just provides a GUI for tools like mencoder and ffmpeg both of which have masses of weird switches and can be difficult to manage. If you work out how to do a conversion with Super then run sysinternals process explorer, find the process that's running (it'll be the one using all the CPU!) and get its properties. From this, you can get the command line needed to carry out the conversion. This would then let you write a batch file etc to automatically process files.
