RM CC3 Insalling Itunes

i work within a school which run RM CC3 and the teachers want me to install Itunes on the network.

 

I was just wondering how hard this is to do and where would i start

Question I have to ask is why? I don't think this is a good idea. Does this mean staff are going to start exchanging music tracks? I can't see the legitimacy of installing iTunes in a network environment. All machines should have Media Player installed, so playing MP3s shouldn't be a problem.

its a teacher who has all these good ideas and takes no for an answer

 

media player is installed on all computer but most teachers are bringing IPODS in and there do not work with media players which are installed

If you really need an excuse not to install this rubbish, it's against the license (paragraph 2):

 

You may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time.

I do believe iTunes has an MSI. Usually downloading the file, running setup, then navigating to %temp% you should be able to copy the MSI from here. I've never deployed it in a network environment for legal reasons.

 

I think the next problem (potentially) is you'll have user areas full of music tracks, eating up valuable disk space.

I'd say NO without even thinking about it.

 

It is a pants idea, anyway, who are they going to blame if their Ipod syncs with the school's ITunes and removes all their music.

 

Its bad enough at our school we have music on the shared area, I'd remove it by I know I'll have teachers throwing a wobbly (its a small amount of music)

Another vote for no, if they can't make iTunes work half sharp on a standalone PC there's certainly no reason therefore to let it loose on a CC3 network (although some might say they would be perfectly suited!)

 

Suggest those users install it locally, if they really must.

When RM started developing their Package Blueprints they were going to do one for ITunes and then stopped the project when it was too difficult to do.

 

We were on the field trials for Blueprint and were expecting to test it - but it never came.

 

Not sure if they ever went on to delop a blueprint for it in the end.

That's a bit of a vague statement by Apple. It could mean you're not allowed to run a single copy of iTunes from a network share, rather than install it via an .msi to multiple computers where it would be run locally. Technically, it's not being used by multiple computers at the same time because each computer has it's own copy of iTunes which is only being used once by the computer it is installed on.

 

If their statement were literally true, surely schools which have networked Apple Mac's would be in breach of the license (through no fault of their own) because iTunes is pre-installed by Apple on every new Mac. Plus, iTunes would get distributed across the network by Apple's own Software Update Server in Mac OS X Server every time they release a new version.

 

Personally, I wouldn't install it since we would very quickly have a network full of copyrighted music and no disk space left on the servers. However, if you need to quickly get some music off of an iPod there are lots of other programs that can do this, like SharePod, YamiPod, Winamp and so on.

One potentially legitimate use for iTines might be for downloading (educational) podcasts. My approach would be to enquire exactly what they want to use it for.

 

If they give reasons that are not valid educational uses, point out that the equipment is there for educational use and that it would be unethical to ask the school to use expensive resources (including your time) for their personal uses at taxpayers' expense.

 

If they give genuine uses for it, explain honestly that iTunes is not easy to install and investigate other software which fulfils their needs.
