Hi all,

I'm looking for a desktop ticker program that will be run over a network in a school. Ideally linking through Active Directory to perhaps give different messages to different groups of users. It will need to be able to pull down "news" from RSS feeds, and be able to give out messages, for example - Fire Drill today at 2pm. We don't want it to be too intrusive to the point where it gets in peoples way, would be better if it could auto hide until there is new news to be shown for example.

If anyone has come across anything like this, or has any ideas, I would be grateful to hear them.

Cheers,

Rab

EDIT: I should also add that the machines on the network are XP. The server is 2003.

Don't know about the different users bit but you could just use any old feed reader and publish your school specific news as an rss feed?

Maybe a bit of javascript or other login script that can run the app and load the relevant set of feeds depending on their ad groups?

I would have thought sharepoint would be the easiest.

Install on any windows server (2k3 or above), already ad integrated (group security), already does rss and can allow teachers/staff access to place messages if you like too.

Let us know if there's anything you need a hand with...

Active desktop on WinXP - load a htm file which parses RSS Feed from whatever source on the network that you specify, with a built in html refresh in the header...?

Sorry to hijack but I'm looking for something similar, the teachers here want a ticker style thing where they can type what they want then it will constantly scroll at the top/bottom of their screen (for learning objectives).

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Just to add to the options, we have been using e-pigeon to send instant messages across our network. It doesn't have the ability to pull in RSS feeds, but it can send customised messages to individuals, groups or all connected users. It is simple and basic but does work well and stays upon the screen until the teacher clicks the message as read. Hope that helps!
