OpenTTD (Transport Tycoon) - Too Adictive!

Running a computer games club at the college I'm at, I was looking at free games, open games, or anything that didnt cost money. So the students could play together nicly (yes, I know Im hopeful)

 

Anyways, I ran across this little gem, something I remember from years ago, its "Transport Tycoon".

 

It appears some nice people have managed to recreate most of it as open source, its even better than the original and its simply fantastic!!! The many hours I lost on the original I appear to be losing again now.

How do you lose money in it?? Build some airports in the largest cities to start, and then keep them busy, expanding the network from there.

 

Should maintain a healthy bank balance whatever else you do!

It is very good, also the signaling is light years ahead of the original.

On there forums there are two ways of getting it working:

 

First is the openGFX project, that way you dont require any of the original files.

 

The other is if you trust the fact that the original is now abandonware, if you do, then its out there and you can get the files you need.

 

(I had the original to take the files off, but the openGFX files make it look very nice)

The true are in the game is trains, doing the game with a complete train network, no aircraft

 

Trains also explode better if you mess up your track by mistake.

I've had a Transport Tycoon Deluxe Scenarios download section on my website since Sept 2000 and according my stats page it's served over 33gb of data since then. Many of the scenarios are still being downloaded today.

It amazes me that this game is still so popular, it's a true classic.

I've been playing openTTD for a couple of years - it's great. In my younger years I play the origional for years and OpenTTD brought back the love!

 

I have found that you need a very big monitor (my 20" is a little small at times) and a pretty quick computer if you want to have the very big maps. I have made my over clocked quad core Q6600 run slow at times with this

Cos I am rubbish and build bus routes and try and fill the special routes that come in but badly so just flood the place and end up losing money. Why do you think I am in IT not in transport!

Ok, under linux (Ubuntu intrepid 8.10)

 

Download and extract the file from here to a folder in your homedir (I'll call it /home/%user%/o-ttd-data/ )

Use the Add/remove util to install openttd

 

open a terminal and run

 

>sudo cp /home/%user%/o-ttd-data/* /usr/share/games/openttd/data

 

Launch the game from the applications menu. Much easier than messing around with the OpenGFX and nightly builds.

 

Right, I'm going to build my empire now... I don't expect to get much else done.. ever hehe

In an amazing stroke of luck I copied it to the OTTD data directory and it worked, no need to decipher your cryptic instructions after all!

Had no idea what you are using, but having just spent a good amount of time trying to get the various versions to work I thought I'd post a quick guide once I made it happen. Glad you've got yours working though, say goodbye to productivity.

It seems to have advanced a little since the last time I tried to play it... in the end I just decided to sort through my ol games "pile" of CDROMs and loaded up the original.

 

I have even bought a copy of "Locomotion" which appears to have been made as TT version 2. But it really annoyed me as it kept making the trains run on the right-side of the points, which made them crash...

 

Ahh, the hours that can be usefully spent building up a jumbo jet/concorde to transfer coal from one end of the map to another... hmmm... I know what I'm gonna do this weekend.
