KeithFermor Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 We have SuccessMaker installed on a low number of systems. Its very good, the kids work well with it and generally it runs clean. But, when a resourceful young student found the way into Admin and ran riot deleting all enrolled students - then the sloppy stuff hit the fan! Restore from backup seemed a good idea; but which files? Didn't want to recover the lot! Call to RM... "Sorry Sir, you no longer have a support contract. Try our knowledge Base", fair enough, support is VERY costly and when things run well... Onto KB: register and then scan the SuccessMaker support area. Hmmm, why are most of the items greyed and not available? You need to have a current support contract to view them! But, I have a licence? You are not allowed to know what the 'FAQ of SuccessMaker backups are', or 'How to uninstall SUccessMaker from a Workstation'. Why? "You must have a support contract". Surely its a basic courtesy to allow access to these Qs & As outside a contract? They are common both in & out of a support contract! I am not a happy bunny when being shoe-horned into yet another expensive contract for answering basic questions. Lots more 'Hhhmmmpppfffff'!
Dos_Box Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Welcome to the wonderful world of RM. We drove them out of Lancashire with torches and pitchforks.
Dos_Box Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 On a more serious note though I know that there are several people on this site who can help you, if only to tut and shake their heads knowingly. Hopefully they can give you the help you need, but not for nothing is it known as Sucky Cess Maker.
MkII Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 We just paid through the nose for a very basic question answered. We should club together and 1 person searches the KB. They didn't recon on school techs getting together!
RobC Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 That's precisely what I did when I had a problem with Successmaker. I spoke to one of the other schools in the area that did have a support contract. I'm sure a few people around would be good enough to answer the occasional query.
Guest metalmonkey Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 We had this problem. The enrollment stuff was deleted, though even today, we don't know how. Anyway here's what we did (taken from our own KB - although I think we pinched it from RM's site) Restore the 'enroll' file from the latest backup to the history folder Run 'repair history' from within the Management System. If the above don't fix it, try the following; Restore complete 'history' including 'student' and 'teacher' folders from a good backup hth
KeithFermor Posted June 16, 2005 Author Posted June 16, 2005 Heh heh heh Now thats wot I call a qwik response! Tanks guys n gals(?)! RM Redundant Machines ? Randomised Marsupials ? Ritual Moonrakers ?
MkII Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Ridiculous Markup, Ruthless Marketing, Robbing Masters 1
Ric_ Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Who do you think christend it Sukky Cess Maker? At least all you lot aren't still trying to get shot of a RM Connect 2.4 (yes Nt4 servers with 98 clients) network! For some bizzarre reason, RM were also holding our domain name and providing our web hosting - for £150 a year!!!!! The County IT services provide this for free!!!!! Sent the fax yesturday to sort that!
KeithFermor Posted June 16, 2005 Author Posted June 16, 2005 As a result of my complaining to RM, they rang personally this morning and resolved my problems with SuccessMaker. So, although a brick wall existed yesterday, today the mortar exposed some humanity in their support services - which I must say I applaud on this occasion. A specimen to place with care in the rarities category...
Ric_ Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 As a result of my complaining to RM, they rang personally this morning and resolved my problems with SuccessMaker. So, although a brick wall existed yesterday, today the mortar exposed some humanity in their support services - which I must say I applaud on this occasion. A specimen to place with care in the rarities category... To be fair, they didn't charge me for transferring my domain name - something that came as a shock!
MkII Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Hey now, come on - stop saying nice things about RM - we all know they're the spawn of the devil!
ninjabeaver Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Yeah, as soon as I started working here I moved away from the Viglen systems and installed Windows 2000 Server with Windows 98 clients. I'm now running Windows 2003 Servers with a mix of Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro clients. Just Windows XP Pro only soon) I've still got RM Successmaker on 15 PC's on a stand-alone network. I had a basic problem and they refused to help unless the school forked out nearly £1500 or £2000 in backup fees. The answer was on the support page, but greyed out. £2000 to fix a simple RM problem. Any probs then drop it in here or PM me. More than happy to get the answer for people. Claw back something from the RM Money Laundering department.
mrtechsystems Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Yeah I came up with the same problem the installation of the program I did not have a support contract well we did but it rang out no documentation or anything just got me teeth in to it and hey presto I got it working all of dig and no help from RM support robbing gits oops did I say that if anyone need any help please just PM me Lee B Senior IT Tech
ajbritton Posted August 5, 2005 Posted August 5, 2005 God knows, I hate RM as much as the next 'person who knows ANYTHING about IT', but every time I've called up about SuccessMaker, I've had some of the best support ever; Quick, intelligent and accurate responses. Interesting point about SuccessMaker (sorry if it's wrong forum), one of the apps grabs the file association for .WSF which scuppers VB script files created in WSF format! AFAIK they have yet to fix it.
ninjabeaver Posted August 8, 2005 Posted August 8, 2005 Yeah, I agree the support has been excellent, but £2K for one question seems a bit steep for my liking.
free4440273 Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 anybody for nsoptimum? rm's brothers in arms?
Sean Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 Thing to remember with Success Maker though is that it's a North American product that RM re-badge IIRC last time I had a Success Maker query I found the answer on the Canadian site!
GrumbleDook Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 Bloody hell ... I can't go anywhere without another one turning up ... Welcome Sean
Sean Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 The 'W' word? *shudder* Well if this is the kind of place where nasty 4 letter words like that get bandied around...
russdev Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 lol well you've already branded two letter word around.... Russ
buzzard Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 For me sins I still know people who work at RM and know schools that are in bed with RM so if anyone needs a hand etc give me a buzz
intrigue Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 The best thing to come out of RM is the ASUS laptop thing. I am unsure of why anyone would want RM CC unless ofcourse you have idiots running your network as lets be honest a 5 year old could use that software. I prefer to have some control over what i am doing without the need for a bulky client. matt
