[wanted] 10 - 12 Workstations wanted for local charity
intrigue posted a topic in Classified Adverts
Hello Everyone, I realise as it is heading towards the summer that a lot of people will be getting rid of workstations. As i do some volunteer work, one of the charities i work for needs 10 workstations capable of running windows 98 or 2000 or at best XP they need to be small form factor type workstations as they are going on a floor next to a gym. If anyone has anything they will be getting rid of please let me know asap. I know there is some talk of the responsiblity of the equipment once it has left your establishment and i am happy to sign any agreement that i take responsibility for it or for the less anal of you, just give me the kit and i will not mention where it came from (as long as there is no obvious asset marking). Thanks matt -
Anybody use 'cheap' fake toner in their OKI's?
intrigue replied to Ben_Stanton's topic in How do you do....it?
IJT? Are they the company that like to send you catalogues/faxes/emails/snailmail/faxes/emails/catalogues. I told them i would never ever ever use their company again thanks to their aggressive marketing and still they tried to get me to get a quote from them. Idiots Matt -
Anyone know any decent companies midlands based that will take an old printer/copier that we need to get rid of? Thanks Mat

It's 5% more than we'll get if they buy it from PC World. Plus the much lower price tag means more families are likely to buy the latest version, saving all the fun we have when kids bring stuff in in MS Works format, or the Easylink problems which can exist with pre-2000 versions of Office. i assume you have office 2007 rolled out then as pre versions dont read .docx so you spend time telling them to same as .doc dfficult for some staff/students to remember matt

Do they have permissions with the shares? Have you tried running the batch script once they are logged on?

Agreed with the above post, jobs askign for Exchange specialists don't always mean you need a qualification in it. I am very much like you in that i know a lot of different things and not really a master of anything but the difference is that i will not let that put me off applying for a job. I generally don't lie but i have learnt that it pays to be a bit more confident in interviews. I went for an IT Specialist role and told them i was a good all rounder which i considered an IT Specialist to be. What they atually wanted me to say was i was particuarly good at networking or administering exchange etc. Which of course is part of what i meant but ot the right answer. My advice would be to apply for jobs that you may not think you will get but just be confident, a willingness to learn is better then saying i cant do this or that. If you know the answer to the question will be negative (i.e. you know you havn't worked with SQL etc) then turn it on its head and say i havn't really done much of that but i had never created a login script before and now my login script is the dogs. When did IT techs jobs, stop becoming male dominated?
intrigue replied to Pottsey's topic in General Chat
Don't get me started on female only Gyms! My point is if you want to be equal be equal, don't praise the fact that through equality and over the top PCness you are now getting added bonuses like the above. -

I agree in a sense more then anything i think why try and push ayone down any path, why not just inform people and let them make the choice. Surely thats upto the careers advisors in schools etc? If i'm a career advisor and i see someone keen and interested in computers no matter what age, race, sex, then i would recommend IT. Whats right with it? Who cares what particular group of people are underrepresented? Oh yeah the people that decide i need 3 more women in my company to fullfil my quota. Is it right that i am more likely to get an interview to be a fireman in my city if i am within a particular ethnic minority? Oh yeah thats right i think they call it positive discrimination. Which to my mind is still discrimination but at least its only discriminating the well represented so thats ok. If it was parity i wouldnt have a problem its when its an advantage that i have a problem? (i am sure that statement will bug the hell out of you) My grandad is asian and i have seriously considered putting british asian on application forms to see if i am more likely to be selected for interviews after all who would question my ethnicity in an interview? I'm going to be in trouble for posting this..... :-)

Interview questions for st-nicholas school, chppenham, wilts
intrigue replied to MicrodigitUK's topic in Educational IT Jobs
You can do simple ones to test their network knowledge, i know they may sound simple but some people really do try to blag their way into jobs like these so its worth asking How do you connect a network printer? What is the command line command to check all of the IP settings of a computer? What does DHCP do? You have a network with 1 windows 2003 server and 10 computers with 100 users, all who have access to a shared folder and their own user area what are the first things you would find out about the network if you were administering it? Quite an open question but looking for answers like, DHCP or static? Hows users logon, permissions for shares, backup procedures etc. It would give you an idea of how they think about things given the relatively simple environment. Hope that helps Matt P.s. i have never interviewed anyone before so they might be rubbish ideas. -
dreamhosts have been good for me but not for everyone. I have also used servage.net in the past and they were ok although the databases seem to run a bit slow at times. Thanks Matt

well speaking of website security when i worked at longslade community college the embc or someone similar hosted their websites and the username and password for FTP was something like "siteID" "tuesday" then you got logged into the folder /siteID/ out of interest i went up a folder and could happily download/remove the websites of over 150 schools (i obviously didnt) but was shocked about the lack of permission based security. Not surprising though as we all know these consortiums are ran by cowboys. matt

try computer-lines.co.uk they have been quick friendly and relativly spam free. Annoyance scores higher then cost in my book and i work at two under funded primary schools. As someone else said, their compatables are crap and i won't be conned into buying £300 worth of stock to receive a crappy £25 printer. Thanks Matt -
The best thing to come out of RM is the ASUS laptop thing. I am unsure of why anyone would want RM CC unless ofcourse you have idiots running your network as lets be honest a 5 year old could use that software. I prefer to have some control over what i am doing without the need for a bulky client. matt
