intrigue

Hello everyone, I have a problem, we have a SELECT agreement here and i wanted to add 1 New Server with the following software, - Windows 2003 Standard Edition - Microsoft Exchange 2007 Standard Does anyone know what else i will need. I have 80pc's and about 20 laptops maybe 600 students and 30 staff i want all staff to be able to check their email and possibly all students. Will i need 100 CAL's for exchange and server? What if i use webmail do i then need more CAL's to cover XXX number of computers connecting externally? Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks Matt

What security reasons have they told you? I have basically been told that there is a "direct" link from the School to the council and the reason they split the two up is because of security with students possibly compromising it (primary by the way). I am still yet to understand the real reason. We have two networks (1 wire and they become 1) and two sets of usernames and passwords. We have a company called INDEXTeam who "manage" the admin network and i look after curriculum. I am more then capable of looking after both and cant imagine how much money could actually be saved by me doing that. Disagree with that there is always a need for added security. My networks are ultra secure but I still like the comfort of having seperate networks and I will never change on that. We have 2 networks here and a stack of servers. What is the need? Enlighten me? A secure network should be just as secure no matter what data etc you have or what services are run. Yeah our admin domain is maintained by Index via the LEA (http://www.indexteam.co.uk or com). Thanks Matt

Please can anyone recommend any good robust headphones for a classroom and also a supplier would be nice. Am i being too hopeful? Thanks matt

If you are supporting users that will be in over half term then it is more then reasonable to expect at least 1 of you to be in. matt

Yes it is with a week or so working in the summer. Where did you see the advert Russ? Matt

I have seen the "server" room and the one server they have which is basically a cupboard with a server in it and apparently the headmaster deals with most of the IT work. I am hoping its not so much a TA position but wouldn't mind doing that as well. I will ask the question on the day! Thanks Matt

Hey thanks for that contink, thats exactly what i was hoping someone would write although i must admit i didn't think i would get such a great response Anyways, so yeah i have had a look around the school and already have a great list of things i could help with which would cost little money and would maybe even save the school money. I am really hopeful for my interview however, i do have to read a short 15 minute story to a group of 7/8 year olds which i am really worried about but as for the rest, fingers crossed! Also if anyone has any other comments please feel free to add them as they are always appreciated. Thanks Matt

Hey guys, Its been a while since i have been on here, mainly because i left Education and have since been working at an Insurance Company. However, I have an interview on Thursday for an IT Specialist role at a primary school and was wondering if anyone in that particular sector could offer me some advice. Basically i am just wondering what are the positive and negative points about working in a primary school and what kind of problems do primary schools face compared to secondary/college's etc. Thanks in advance Matt P.s. my previous experience was 5 years at a college and 6 months at a high school hence why i am aksing about Primary Schools.

Forget my response im being thick. matt

I think we have been sold the idea of Microsoft Learning Gateway and am half way through the "presentation" i must admoit that having been involved in the moodle rollout at WQEIC i was more then happy to go for that hear but it seems the powers that be are not interested. To my great annoyance. Matt

Wow 3 replies in the same second. RM sucks major ass and i would love to get rid of it, despite the facta 5 year old could operate it i think its slow and just horrible. CC3 should die a horrible death IMO matt

We have that samesetup as you and have just merged the two but still with CC3 we will eb going Vanilla fairly soon hopefully matt

Having rang them about this outage they have not confirmed anything for the 13th and have told me to contact Carrol Morris my local authority. hmmm matt

Extremely Mediocre Broadband Connection EMBC are rubbish, FACT!!!! If i was the network Manager here then serious questions wouldbe asked as to why we are still using them matt

We useacompany called PCB although i cant find a website for them. They took everything for free and we are in leicester. The guy that collected them said he went to Dorset before so i assume they quite versatile as far as distances are concearned.

i had real problems with one that wouldn't reset Packard Bell i-connect. The machine was crapthough so not that fussed. Annoyed te hell out of me though matt

i have used recycool in the past as well as now we use acton aid here matt

We want to know if anyone has a centrally managed wireless setup. We have about 30 Airstations now and think its getting way out of control so what we would like to do is have a central antenna and cover the whole of the college campas (200m radius i think). Anyone have a similar setup? .matt

My only advice is dont be scared to say "im not sure but ill find out and get back to you" The internet has the answer for everything and you can teach yourself everything IT from there so if you cant or dont know how to do something then go and find out. I have been on four or five courses which didnt teach me much (other then the XML and ASP.net course) and have had no other formal training other then teaching myself and i can quite competantly deal with most problems. Also if its not working dont treat the machine like a puppy thats broke its leg, get in there get the job done and dont be scared to make the odd mistake just try to make sure you have some way of rectifying the mistake. Thanks .matt

whats edugeek?

yeah but no but yeah but no it wastn't me right? it was tracy in the back of the class with her sister who apparently is having a baby with my brothers sisters dad who actually went to prison and i aint talking like a naughty kids home but thats where i saw jason who was smoking some fag init. .matt

Yes it brought a lot to my attention also and now i can make informed decisions on people i see in train stations. 8O .matt

I wasn't complaing about dreamweaver btw, more a rant on xhtml, html and css However I do loath flash, almost as much as real. I hate sites with flash navigation. bad flash is annoying just like any frontpage extensions. but some flash is good like this site i was given a link to yesterday. link yeah well its a good example of good flash haha. .matt

your right stewart and like i said the intellisense is great server side wise. Probably not worth it witht he .NET framework especially when you have visual studio which is better in that sense but as for ASP, PHP and HTML oh and CSS, its definatly worth the cost. HOWEVER. as ADOBE have now taken over macromedia we will see how things continue. If you like Flash by the way then you might wanna check out what ytou can do with FLEX another macromedia thing which is immense. anyways i wont go into that. .matt

oh i see who's the other suer you was posting as then? And yeah thats definatly the way things are done, i remember (here it comes) when dreamweaver was at version 3 and thing like HotMetal Pro and Hotdog where competing to be leaders in the field, frontpage 98 was pretty shit too and i even remember using the frontpage componants(extensions or whatever) in a site i made (shock horror). I think i settled on dreamweaver because like visual studio it has intellisense so i dont have to remember all the tags. Yes it makes me somewhat lazy but its handy i dont really use the WYSIWYG editor as i mainly work in code view because of the ASP etc. .matt
