What about a Subaru Impreza STi? Should be able to get a 3 year old example for about £10k and it's a good bit faster than any of the other cars you've mentioned. Running costs could be pricey tho!

Don't give up in diesel I've just bought 07 plate Mondeo ST TDCi for the kind of money your talking about.

 

155Bhp and enough torgue to pull up trees. In fact mid range is fantastic.

 

Well quipped and economy is good I'm currently getting 40 round town. Only had it a week so can't comment on long journeys.

 

Ain't too many of them around either.

 

There is also the ST220 (petrol), drinks petrol and goes well.

I know you said less than 3 years old but you could get yourself an E46 M3 for that money.. also look into Evo VIII or VII's they have plenty of poke and fit that budget.

 

M3's are also pretty much fully loaded from the forecourt. Plus the person who had it before no doubt would be older and rich and would have done all the work thats needed doing.

 

Not that I like M3's or anything but the above are my two shortlisters for my next car.

Definitely don't knock diesel until you have tried a "quick" one. I have a new Seat Leon FR 2.0 TDI with an ABT remap on. It's very very quick for what it is. Running at about 210BHP and very practical as well, giving me about 45 mpg even whilst thrashing it.

Standard on all Rotary engines, is how they are designed. They burn petrol and oil

Honda S2000 there are others like a Seat Leon Cupra 1.8T 196BHP. BMW 320's 325's are nice as well. The new 325CL is stunning.

I'm looking now but won't be buying for another year (the wife wants her bigger house first!). I will have upto £10k and want something less than 3 years old and no more than 20k miles but I want fast and sporty with some practicality. I'd love an RX8 but am also looking at Focus ST, Leon TFr, Octavia VRS. Anyone else own one of these? Can you recommend anything else? I love the Golf GTi but a little out of my price range.

You would be surprised. I'm 22 and my FR costs me approximately £650 to insure which I think is very reasonable. I am a member of the IAM though and I know that that makes a difference.

No one has mentioned the 207GTi - 1.6 turbo (175Bhp) or the even quicker Corsa VXR - 1.6 turbo (190Bhp) although the Corsa is very boy racer!

Take this as an extreme example - I doubt very much that this is a typical discount but my insurance as part of the IAM costs me £657.32 per year through a broker that deals with IAM members only. THe best quote before that I could get was nearly £3500 per year.

 

I think a combination of IAM, postcode, car location etc etc etc made for my massive discount, as I said, I doubt very much that it is typical. IAM on its own should present you with a substantial sum of money off though.
