SYNACK Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 What brand is the moniter, are there drivers and has it been detected properly. Is the graphics adapter all running properly because safe mode vga often pulls this stunt. If it is a tv or something that does not report its resolution properly you may be able to set custom resolutions in the advanced configuration for the GPU depending on the brand/model.
Gerry Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I had a few PC's do something similar. Problem turned out to be ATI GFX drivers installed along with Intel's. Removed ATI drivers and they were ok afterwards.
westleya Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I also had this problem once with a new monitor. Turned out that the OLD VGA cable I used to connect it wasn't fully wired, so the PC had no idea what type of monitor it was talking to. I could get a picture, but only use standard resolution settings. A new cable solved the problem.
nicholab Posted February 3, 2009 Author Report Posted February 3, 2009 (edited) Iiyama Prolite E1900WS? I installed the drivers for this. Removing the ATI drivers how did you go about this? Just from the control panel and a reinstall? This monitor has worked in 1440x900 with the previous graphics setup same cable same!! I cold try an other cable. Edited February 3, 2009 by nicholab
Michael Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 It's usually a graphics driver related issue. Updating to the latest ATI/Nvidia/Intel drivers should solve the problem.

Michael Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Reading above I can see you've installed drivers for both the graphics card and the screen itself. By navigating to Display Properties > Settings, can you actually select 1440 x 900? And if you can, do you get just a black screen? The AMD 780G Chipset (I believe) comes with on-board graphics. How much system memory have you allocated to your graphics? If you're unsure, if you right click My Computer and choose Properties, it should tell you how much memory you have. If you get a silly number like 1008MB, this would mean 16MB of your 1GB (1024MB) system RAM has been allocated as graphics memory (for example).
Gerry Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 If you think you need to remove a GFX driver, check Add/Remove control panel and select the driver then click "Remove". I usually use PC Wizard to check what hardware is under the bonnet.

It does have onboard graphics does any one else have this issue with ATI graphics cards. It is currently using 256mb of system ram for graphics. PeterW Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 No it should be fine, is this the first time you have set up this PC or did it have another monitor on it before? Try going to device manager and uninstall the plug and play monitor under the monitor category then either restart or hit scan for hardware changes.

MkII Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Just set up my first 17" (WS naturally) E series Dell Latitudes today - all set to this resolution by default, and the only others to choose from are stretched 1024x768 or 800x600. 1440x900 is too small for everyone I set these up for. So crappy stretched 1024x768 it was. Not had time yet to look for something better than the provided drivers.
