Graduate seeking employment as Trainee IT Tech in West Midlands

Hello All,

 

I am new to this site using but I hope you guys would be able to help me out.

 

Recently I have completed my degree in Bsc Hons Business Computing and IT where I have obtained a 2.1.

 

I want to pursue a career as an IT technician in west midlands region. Coming just out of education I am not been given a chance by employers. I only have one years work experience which I undertook as part of my gap year as an ICT support officer in public sector. In this position I learn't about Active Directory, Windows NT, 2000 and 2003, setting up printers, restoring files, VPN setup and backing up servers.

 

I was hoping you guys would be able to point me in the right direction of any employers out there looking to offer trainee or junior positions in the west midlands region to people like me who have just come out of education. I am a quick learner; I pick up new skills very quickly and I can assimilate new products and service information very quickly.

I would suggest you look at the websites for your local councils as they will advertize ICT Technician positions - Birmingham, Solihull, Worcester etc.

 

You might also want to drop a letter and CV to local councils in case they have an opening for a peripatetic (sp?) technician.

 

It also might be worth contacting local schools to see if they are in need of a technician. I know one guy who left our place and now works at about 3 different schools doing their IT and I don't think those positions were advertized.

There are plenty of job sites out there. CertForums under employment should supply you with a list to of recruitment agencys etc.

 

IT Jobs at CWJobs, the specialist for contract and permanent IT positions, reed.co.uk - jobs, careers, employment and recruitment (Are just two which come to mind) and all your local council job sites I am sure will have plenty of jobs.

I was in a similar situation back in august.

 

Graduated a year ago BSc in Computer Networks 2:1, no real previous jobs in IT apart from maintaining 12 PCs at a small community run computer access point (nothing more complicated than 12 PCs in a workgroup on a switch with a broadband router)

 

I just looked at and applied for all IT related jobs on the local council websites, went to the interview for the first job and was offered it the same day.

Even if there are jobs advertised that you think you can't do or meet all the criteria, still apply. Apply for every job going if necessary. The worst they can say is no. Also try to remain positive. Knockbacks will be a cert, but try not to let it get you down.

Do try local councils; my first job was a 13k a year Junior IT Techy job at a local school. Two years on I have moved to the biggest company in the UK educational IT sector. Techy jobs in schools are ideal as you get experience at almost everything, leaving you with an impressive CV.

Also, although people on here bag RM. It is a great company to work for, | rmCareers , there are always jobs opening up at this time of year due to new schools taking on Managed Services etc.

Apart from the local council sites is anyone aware of any other place where trainee ICT technician jobs are advertised?

 

With minimum experience I believe I will be better suited to a trainee role in the west midlands region. The market for ICT technicians seem really quite to me am I looking in the wrong places for jobs?

I just went on a few job websites. There are loads of I.T. jobs. As you have one year of experiance you shud be fine to go into a 1st line help desk role. Then once experiance/knowledge is shown you will be moved further up the food chain.

Its a matter of time before a school makes you an offer.
