Right, when i went out last night i turned my pc off (using the power button on the front, bad i know...was in a rush)....

Came home around 1am ish....pc was on.....slightly drunk, pushed the power button again...

woke up this morning...it was on again!!!! Looking at event viewer, it came on around 9 last night and 6ish this morning...

Grrr, where can i find out what's going on?

When i had a new motherboard put in my laptop it started doing this. It turned out there was a feature in the bios to automatically turn it on.

Save some electricity - turn it off at the wall at night. I switch off the extension lead with monitor, CPU, printers & router connected every night... save money on the electricity bills as well as stress :)

The BIOS may have a setting that says something like 'turn on after power loss' ... and you may be having power spikes / drops making the machine think that it has to turn back on. Make sure that it is connected onto a surge protected 4 way or has some sort of surge protection device on there.

It can be a sign that there are power issues in the area, round here we have the lights flickering a few times a month ... it is usually bad around christmas. They sorted it out 4 years ago by doing some work on the local sub-station (shunted some stuff onto another sub-station so the estate is more evenly split) but it has started to crop up again.

Failing that ... you have a ghost or possibly a spider that wants to check its wmail.

You are spot on there Michael, that was my first thought when i came home, so when i turned it off again i made sure it had popped out again...so i' pretty sure its not that...

Mine's done this since new, but mine spookeily does it at 8am precicely every time I hibernate it or shut it down and leave the mains to it. BIOS has been checked, double checked and tripple checked and no sign of wake up commands or power on at X time etc etc but still set your watch by it 8am sharp it awakes. Just have to remember to turn the plug off or live with it booting back up.

...or... you could have a stalker who keeps checking your system, forcing WOL packets so his trojan can send out the data.

*cue: creepy music* ;)

are you stalking me Contink? ;)

My work PC always turns itself on fairly early in the morning. Hibernate it every night yet without fail its switched on when I come in the next day. Thought it was a colleague helpfully turning it on but it happens even when I'm the only one in!

Never got round to investigating it since I always forget to look! And its fairly useful so not too bothered :) I reckon its a BIOS setting though

hah...My previous NM had a long argument with a staff memeber about this - the PC of said member kept powering up - NM said "ridiculous, you're imagining it."

Hey Presto, "Wake on alarm" was set...:D

It's me, I can't help it!!

On a more serious note.. I had something to do with waking on USB.

And having a wireless mouse.. if the floor moved / table / ghost / wind / brother / who knows what else moved the mouse.. up came my desktop.

It amused me for a while, shutting the pc down.. knocking the desk with my chair.. shutting down.. knocking with chair.. shut down .. knock... you get the idea

so back to the stalking:hat:

You want a giggle? :o

When i got home this evening my boyfriend looked at me proudly and said "i know why your pc keeps turning itself on!". He led me into the room and pointed to an old laptop underneath which was my wireless keyboard...

Basically when i set up my new pc, i kept my old pc (the pc in question) plugged in to the power and network so i could remote to it. I'd plugged the keybaord in to it just incase it had a moan about not having one attached, at some point ive dumped an old laptop on top of the keyboard. My boyfriend had knocked this at some point today and the pc came to life!

I have to say this is the only answer that makes sense. I dont know why its done it twice in the middle of the night, must be people down stairs slamming around or ive knocked it and the laptop has eventually slipped further onto the keyboard...

My fella now thinks he's a qualified Technician.....even did some sort of victory dance when i agreed that it coud well be the cause of my phantom boot ups...

Sounds like he's on to something there... especially if your BIOS power settings will allow the computer to power on from a keyboard press.
