laserblazer Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I'm just loading up the first of the new HP DC7800s prior to making an image. I successfully resisted Microsoft's insistance that I install SP3 but what about IE7? The computers will be in ICT suites.

elsiegee40 Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 We don't have SP3 and I'm unlikely to install it anytime soon, but we do have IE7 and have had it for some time. Staff seem to prefer it to IE6 and there were certainly no complaints when I installed it.
sidewinder Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 IMO its been round long enough now that its more hassle to resist installing it than to just install it It doesnt appear to break anything major (apart from the 'restore active desktop' button) Potentially you could confuse staff with the new interface but by this point I would expect most to have it at home anyway

kmount Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 The resistance for us was the change in layout and the re-training issues it would create, similar but on a smaller scale to rolling out Office 2007. We in the end went for it and firefought the calls about tabbed browsing, it helpfully wanting to help them secure their internet settings even though these are controlled perfectly adequately by GPO etc. Bit like everything else, functionality/flexibility against security.

Personally I use Firefox, and a few of the staff have had to have FF installed on their PC/laptop as the LEA's outlook-based webmail doesn't work with any version of IE since they "updated" it last week The head has IE7, FF, Opera.... she likes to try out different browsers I think! lol

Been using it since it came out !! Never had a problem with it. 1

stratisphere Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 We've got IE7 and SP3. To be honest the only problem we had was IE7 wouldnt install if you did SP3 first (which isnt a problem any longer as MS have fixed the installer). It just makes sense?

Michael Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I use both XP SP3 and IE7. As a recommendation, creating a slipstreamed SP3 disc does give better results. IE7 has been around for quite a while now, so I see no reason not to install it unless you have an application(s) that simply won't work. XP SP3 is essentially XP SP2's post hotfixes and over 1000 bugs fixed. It's extremely beneficial and is well worth installing. You may find these update packs useful too (once you've installed XP SP3).
Simcfc73 Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I am 100% up to date, I used the IE7 to turn off tabs (I hate them so no one gets them ) and no one noticed. You can ADM it to look like IE6 so why wait.
FN-GM Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 We use IE7, the staff and students use the search facility allot. Staff use the tabs as well but we have disabled them for students. We have also enabled the menu bar and forced it at the very top so it looks more like IE6
jsnetman Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Had it installed site wide here but after a while went back to IE6. Problem being a strange case of IE7 closing when opening certain pages containing Flash. I was unable to determine what the fault was and does not seem to affect all establishments. But if it works 100% for you go for it.
