Video Conferencing... How do you di it! :)

I have been tasked with setting buying and setting up some sort of video conferencing at the school here.

 

Anyone done this, any pitfalls or things I should know, any reccomended equipment?

 

Any help appreciated. I have an external ip reserved for this service already with our internet provider.

In the first instance, find out what kit the people who you want to talk to are using - there are several methods, most of which are mutually incompatible.

Or you could go for the recommended approach and make sure what you have works using your allocated e164 number.

We went with Matrix, who sold us some Aethra Vega X3 systems. They've pretty much cornered the market in Somerset too.

we have used both Aethra Vega and polycoms systems both work very well. I would first check if your Regional broadband consortium (if you are using them as a ISP) has a preferred supplier and kit as this could take a lot of the hassle out of it. We use the LGFL kit for more details cms.lgfl.net - Video Conferencing

for physical kit lifesize seem best, but you have to ask, who are you going to be talking to? If it's the same people then kit is fine, but if they don't know, or don't want to kit out every location with VC boxes, then have a look at WebEx which is apparently good.

We have 2 polycom units here and have had no problems with either. However, I wouldn't say the use of Video Conference gets used a lot here - mainly the odd call to schools in Europe due to our Language College status every now and again.

 

We are also at the minute VCing with HighTowers school one per week using one of their students and our French foreign language assistant to help with revision for his exams.

You still need cameras and mic's, but they can help with this too.
