Which Witch Wireless

The first school I work in seems to have lots of money ATM and is looking for some kind of wireless solution: either a few wireless APs dotted about for use with a laptop trolley, OR a whole wireless management thing across the whole school

Can I have some recommendations please?

I shall approach Ruckus, but who else? And which APs are good if they end up just going with a few of those?

Well there are two you could use.

 

1 your could setup few AP's around the site where laptops are mostly used.

 

2 You could use one router with a large omi Aerial that covers the site (this is what my school uses, I find it alot more easier to control and monitor access)

What sort of coverage are you getting out of Option 2?

I get around 200 square meters of a 18dBi omni then it starts getting weak.

I thought as much. All our building and brick and stone so we wont get the kind of range you can.

For a standalone solution Cisco WAPs are very good (coverage IMHO is much better than equivelent 3com/netgear/linksys) - very reliable and a good range of aerial configurations. Plus it would be quite easy to upgrade to a fully centrally managed system at a later date should they want to (using a Cisco manager-type-box-thingy).

Do you mean a 200m radius? 200 square meters is less than 15mx15m!

We had a demo of aruba wireless at our recent conference in somerset, it is very impressive stuff. I'd advise having a look at it, as it should be able to do everything you want and a lot more.

where's the best place to get Aruba and Ruckus?

Have a look at ADA Networks, ADA Networks

 

They did everything here and our system works perfectly. HP procurve kit. Our entire school, switches, controllers and WAPS cost £ 20,000 and that included re-cabling the site, installation, training and all the other stuff.

 

If you do check them out say St Matthews Primary School recommended you!

The Aruba Networks solution seems very good just this minute spoke to a chap called Bod very helpful, I'm going to recommend this hardware for our new Post 16+ building when its finished:)

I've had quite a lot of BlueSocket gear off these guys and they have always been helpful and competitive.

 

@Witch: Obviously you wouldn't need anything as big as I have but they do smaller solutions which still have a lot of the same options.

You say you are interested in looking at Ruckus and also other options and a post has suggested Bluescoket, both good ideas although I would have to favour the Ruckus product on many points which I would be happy to discuss further with you.
