We use @bishopbarrington.net; simply because Nominet's process for setting up an initial IPS tag (not transfer) for our "official" sch.uk domain didn't work and their phone support was next to useless.

I though the government has said that for e-safety pupils and staff should not be able to be identified from their email address? this includes gender, age or location.

Exactly. Their own information contradicts itself - an @school.region.sch.uk address immediately identifies the address as being a school, it's name, and where in the country it is.

We use our .sch.uk because it's the only dns domain our LEA will allow us to transfer mail for. Mail addresses take the form of:

[email protected]

We generate our login names in the format of FLLLLLLLXX

F = First Name Inital

L = Lastname

XX = Two digit year of entry, eg current Y7 is 08.

So for e-safety purposes we fail miserably.

I agree - that's kind of where this question has sprung from. This year our user names for Year 7 are all initials+part of admission number. We are now moving to school.org so they will be as anonymous as we can make them in that there will be no name and the school's location won't be identified.

We used to use something similar but changed this year. It has been mentioned that Lancashire schools who don't use .sch.uk are being persuaded to move back.

We don't have and never have had staff or students with school.norfolk.sch.uk email addresses the school.norfolk.sch.uk email addresses are only used for generic accounts i.e head, office, ictc

We don't use our .sch.uk any more mainly because the email address is so long and unmemorable, infact we may as well be talking:

friez@emailserverdaemonthingy.Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.org.uk
tbh, it's just as memorable.

Edit: Had to quote it as edugeek automatically shortened it!

Edit2: And it's chopping it up now!

We have the [email protected] email addresses for staff.

We don't provide email accounts for students (it's a long story, but the LEA are supposed to be providing all students in the county with email addresses but it hasn't got off the drawing board yet, I think).

It is off the drawing board, we've had all students setup for accounts since early last year. Distributed logons to kids from september it works alright, kids just use it in lessons like it is MSN.

For the Northants Learning Platform we went with xxyyzzz@ where xx is the first two letters of first name, yy is the first two of the family / surname and zzz is a three digit increment. Meets all the anonymity requirements from Becta.

By default the domain used is schoolname.lpplus.net but schools can transfer over the domain they use to LP+ now as well (well ... once I've written up the report, etc from the pilot and we have the processes in place!)

Ticks all the boxes really.

I've just made a huge leap of imagination. I typed www. in front of bishopbarrington.net and came up with a school website. The next bit took some doing, but eventually (Lady Luck was smiling on me here) I hit the Contact tab, and Hey Presto! I found the address for Bishop Barrington School. :D

Whatever you use will advertise where you are in some way or other.

Your domain name (part of your email address) is pretty public and when Becta talk about anonymity they are talking about identifying significant details about the individual.

If you consider your domain is a bit like the school uniform. You know that particular kids are in particular schools by the uniform they where, but you don't know their name or their age.

Small school - tiny classes:

we use use login @schoolname.co.uk (our website is www .schoolname.co.uk)

The logon is yyforename: e.g.07jane where the number is the year they start in reception... in the class with 3 girls called alicia in it, they are yyaliciaS where S is the first letter of their surname.

Staff use first initial and surname for easy identification; e.g. jsmith

What about Alicia Smith, Alicia Sanderson and Alicia Summers? ;)

@beeswax I know where you're coming from and finding out a school's address is easy; but you don't immediately know form our domain that we are a school. Which is both good and bad in different ways.

Fortunately that hasn't happened... like I said; small school - it's more likely to happen with bigger classes.

For the pupils its FLLddmm F-first initial LL-first 2 letters of family name dd-day of birth mm-month of birth (for John Smith born 17th Feb = JSM1702), AD logon however is year starting followed by full name (eg 7JohnSmith). Staff is purely first initial followed by family name (FBloggs).

Domain is school.lea.sch.uk.

Not forgetting Alicia Silverstone

Just about to setup all pupils with [email protected] with yr08 being the year of entry. Agree it's right pain in the backside when giving my e-mail address to companies, especially if the person's first language isn't English.....

Don't know why we use yrxxxxx It's just been the way it's historically done here!

Arron Seabury or Shirley Itnyre would have interesting email addresses :)

(Both actual surnames according to surnames.co.uk)
