Moving a Sharepoint database

Has anybody moved their default Sharepoint database from the SSEE install to another server running SQL 2005?

 

I want to leave one server running the Sharepoint, IIS etc but the database on its own server.

 

They are quite a few guides around, but they all seem to mention different possibilities of moving the database. Does anybody have a tried and tested way of doing it that has worked for them?

you might think twice after you have heard/read this. ;-)

 

SharePoint is the worst product to move when it comes to the database.

 

You have to back up your site, delete it, rebuild it with 2 servers (web/application server and database server) and then restore it.

Your right, its not as straight forward as I had hoped. Is it any easy to keep the database on the same server but to move it to a different drive? I am just concerned that with the database on the c:\ it won't be long before the drive runs out of space. Drive d:\ has 200gig free.

 

I can either leave it running the free SQL server or upgrade to Microsoft SQL 2005 also.

SharePoint looks at the database service rather than directly at the database - all application that use sql do actually, so you might be able to do the fellowing

You might find these specific instructions for moving SQL internal database between drives: Saurabh: How do you move the "Windows Internal Database" (embedded SQL Server 2005 Express) to a different drive than C:

Could you not just do as I did and expand the C Drive into the space you D takes? I extended my RAID array into another 2 disks and then expanded the C Drive using a Linux boot CD (referenced on here somewhere ages ago for expanding / shrinking partitions in relation to dual booting). The system was fine after doing it and had no issues and meant I added another 150 gig of space to the C Drive for it to eat into.

This would suggest that it's because the hyphen is an invalid character in the database name, therefore you need to put the database name in square brackets.

you could ghost the c:\ drive, repartition and then reinstall?

 

I've used the stsadm tool to move an entire install to a different server. it took a day of messing around, but worked 100% afterwards

Damn this is getting annoying now.... Getting another error message, Do I need to put the square brackets anywhere? I have tried the obvious places but still no joy.

I think you need to use an apostrophe ' and not a grave accent `.
