Tape is along way from being dead. It's not perfect, but nothing is gonna replace it for a LONG time.

 

I can't be arsed to argue with people about backups. I've had enough people come to me for help restoring from there "backup" which some called ICT "pros" said worked and was better then my solution.

24 Slot Dell TL2000 LTO4 (SAS or SCSI) loader is currently £5034 off, you *can* remove the tapes from the options too.

 

£2700 or so inc delivery. I wanted one a couple of weeks ago and it was too expensive. Now I have TWO on the way as it was still cheaper than the single one before.

Done right, tapes are great. With my LTO4s running (soon) it will all be encrypted by the drive and keys managed by the loaders.

 

Oh, and I think I shall need to upgrade my servers/network to keep up, I'm already running at over 2500MB/min on LTO3 (windows has issues at pushing more than 60-70MB/s over tcp/ip)

Still un-decisive about the back-up methods to use. i need to get something in place asap. Any recommendations from the big wigs?

a simple and quick solution, not bothered about how fancy it sounds as im not in competetion with anyone just a method thats not overpriced and is simple to use.

I think the student data is personal information, not school work. I remember an old building at my previous school had boxes of it dating back years ( well into the early 70's).

Five years, I wish... Student data has to be held until they are 30 (this refers to their SIMS data).

 

Their files on the other hand, I have yet to find any information about.

I backup to tape in August, and then never overwrite, I have a big pile of tapes going back 4-5 years, they probably don't work, [i don't care].
