Problem with HP pc's shutting down when inserting USB Pens.

I have a round 90 HP DC7700 pc's. They have been on our network now for over 12 months. The image i originally created works fine but over the holidays i updated the image. I just updated certain bits of software and added Adobe Web suite. I installed the Windows Updates it picked up but did not add or change any drivers.

 

Now when anyone inserts any USB device ( Pen, HDD or Camera) the PC just shuts straight off (crashes) and then starts to reboot. This is happening on several machines i have tried today so i know its just not one fault Mobo.

I have had it too and had to disable usb in bios and then create a new image. Oh what fun.

Did you then re-enable USB after you imaged them?

I've never known software to be the root cause of this problem, so I would put it down to a motherboard problem. The probability of them developing the same problem is a mystery, however chances are you bought them at the same time.

XP SP3 I put it down to, all mine started doing it, I used the same drivers with SP2 and no issues put SP3 on and voilla they all started doing it again. Seems to be some glitch with the chipset usb drivers and SP3 I suspect.

Well I've deployed XP SP3 to some HP DC5700's (with no problems) and on Monday I know for a fact they have mostly HP DC7700's at another site.

 

I did start a new image (based around XP SP3) on just the one machine before the holidays but didn't experience any problems.

 

Did you install XP SP3 'on top' of XP SP2 or create a new XP SP3 slipstreamed disc and install as new?

i installed SP3 on top of SP2

Brand new SP3 made and SP3 over SP2 both had the issue for me.

Have you installed the chipset drivers for the DC7700?

try placing these files in system32 overwriting the origionals

 

usbehci.sys and usbport.sys

 

get them from an sp2 installation and put them on your updated/sp3 machine.

 

it worked for me after many bluescreens/looping bootups

I'll try the chipset drivers first tehn i'll try the sys files if that does not work.

If i uninstall XP SP3 the USB work and do not crash the PC. On further googling i have afound some small info on HP intel and AMD based PC's having problems.

 

I'll try and find a cure or it looks like creating another image and leavinf XP sp3 off.......... :

The problem with HP and XP SP3, is HP had created single images for Intel based systems and used them on AMD based systems. Googling will no doubt provide more information, but the USB problem you're experiencing isn't related.

 

For experimentation purposes, I would create a slipstreamed XP SP3 disc which is straight forward to do. It would be interesting to see if it helps you, because I have pretty much completed an image of XP SP3 + applications on a HP DC7700 without the problems you're experiencing.
