actech Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I have had a request from some of the admin team if it is possible to have a calender that all staff can access and use for sharing dates of assignments, exams, and excursions etc. Does anyone use something like this on your networks and if so what is it. I have thought of a web based browser but we do not run seperate admin and student domains so I'm not sure how to make it staff view only? Any help greatly appreciated!
kmount Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 A good starting place might be with what email provision you have?
kxv2020 Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Exchange/Outlook perhaps? - OR Alternatively if you use Windows Server 2003 - you can install SharePoint [free edition] which has built in Calendars which you can restrict to certain AD groups and integrates seamless with AD!
actech Posted August 31, 2008 Author Posted August 31, 2008 A good starting place might be with what email provision you have?We have our own exchange server on site, with all staff having email, Though only a few use outlook, the rest only have OWA. I did think about sharing calenders through Outlook, but need something simplier (yes some of the staff are that useless with computers!) Alternatively if you use Windows Server 2003 - you can install SharePoint [free edition] which has built in Calendars which you can restrict to certain AD groups and integrates seamless with AD!Always thought that we needed a licence for sharepoint. Might be worth looking into.
kesomir Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 zimbra, exchange (and horde I think) do this - alternatively there are a bunch of web apps that would also do what you want such as: eGroupWare: Home phpgroupware.org :: phpGroupWare google groupware. 1

You don't need a license if you already use Windows Server 2003 - Download details here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=EF93E453-75F1-45DF-8C6F-4565E8549C2A&displaylang=en 2

superfletch Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Do you use SIMS? If you do and everyone has access to it the school diary could be a starting point?
Hightower Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 If you use a web calendar of some description, can you not set the permissions on it to staff only at folder level?
Domino Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Sharepoint would be my fav - especially as you can set permissions per ad group, it doesn't require a seperate login and you can set it as your intranet. plus once you start using it the possibilities grow... and its free (barring something to run it on)

I have a server I think I could run it off without too many problems.
gshaw Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Windows SharePoint Services v3, free and does exactly what you need 1

If you have an exchange server on site just create a cal in the public folder and give users acess rights as needed?
