Spaces in username box

Hey,

I've got a problem at the moment where the kids have figured out that if you put spaces in the username box noone can log on

eg, jonejones........................................loser

I was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to stop people typing spaces into the username box?

I doubt there is. You will just have to educate them to see if they can hold left mouse and drag in the box then theres stuff that needs deleting.

I don't think there is a way to prevent certain characters being typed into the box. But is it really a major problem? All that happens is they try to logon, get denied then try again. Not too bad is it?

No its not a major problem, just very annoying when you have walk all over the school every lesson to sort that out because the kids look at you gone out when you try and explain it to them.

If you use the Ctrl-Alt-Del to log on screen, it wipes what was in the box so that reprebates cannot leave the computer with loads of spaces in there.

 

If a kid cannot log on, they can always try going back to that screen - it's what I do.

Just using the CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't do it:

 

In the Group Policy (I set this on the machine directly but I think you can apply it in your GPO), if you set the

 

Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options

 

... about the 25th option is "Interactive Logon: do not display last username". Enable this and it'll be clear every time the student logs in.

@indiegirl: I assumed everybody did that anyway.. since you would be changing the username surely you would delete the entire contents of the box?

oh no our kids are not that clever to think of deleting anything already in the box

Hang on, surely if the PCs are on a domain then the logon box times out to leave the press CTRL+ALT+DEL to begin mesage which would only show a valid username if the next user presses the required key combination.

 

What indieGirl suggests is more a help in preventing deliberate failed login lockout. Kids of today despise anything that requires effort such as repeatedly typing in a username

A problem we come across occasionally is the little scroggs changing the domain name from SCHOOL to SCH00L in the drop down box. Looks exactly the same in the font MS uses so no-one susses it till I am called over!!!!

 

.....and no, I can`t be bothered changing the domain name to something less spoofeable.

How are they chaning the domain name!?!? If you on Win 98 I can understand, but on an NT based one its given by the domain so they must be domain admins or somthing to change that

Two domains with a trust.....ie School and Admin. I have thought of reducing to one domain but there are benefits to existing set-up.

 

We still have a few odd W95 machines in classrooms which are essentially just used to run Office Apps etc. The log-on screen in W95 allows you to overtype the domain name in the drop down box.

 

Not really a problem as these will be replaced soon

Here is an example of the ctrl+alt+del system we run here, its foolproof and tamper proof.

 

So there is a way of doing it

I thought Ric_ meant 2 domains.. one being School and the other Sch00l, which meants that users could select the wrong one quite easily in with xp/2000 machines.

Yeah we have enabled it now so we will see how it goes, just wondering about the time lapse now, was wondering if there is anyway of shorting the time it takes for it to pop up????

I'll have a look about and see what i can find, there is probably a config file you can edit the delay with but if its even possible you would have to deploy/update that file individually to every machine as far as i know...

I have a similar problem in that some of the kids insist on writing swear words in the username field then walking off. Ok I can track the last user who logged on, but it is very time consuming. If only Windows was clever enough to automatically remove words other than logon names!

 

Also another problem I had recently (thankfully was fixed quickly) was the kids ticking "Log on using dial-up connection". After some research navigating to:

 

HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Windows NT > CurrentVersion > Winlogon

 

And enter a new String Value RasDisable and set the value to 1. The Log on using dial-up connection box is now faded when logging off or restarting Windows.

Yup, I have found that Dial up box turn off before, I think it was here, its a good little one, stops people fiddling
