PaperCut - Pupil Printing Issue

Evening everyone,

 

We are seeing an issue with PaperCut when deploying a printer for pupils. All printers are deployed via GPP at the user level. Staff users log in, they are shown the PaperCut Client (loaded from a share), and they print to what we call 'PullQueue' - they then go to the device with their code and print what they sent. I assume a lot of schools do this.

 

With pupils, they print direct. When they log on, they should be given a printer called 'ygg-disgyblion'. Some pupils get it, some pupils do not get it. If Pupil A logs on to Computer A, they won't get it, but if Pupil B logs on to Computer A they do get it. Then if Pupil A logs on to Computer B they get it. It's totally random and I am stumped by why this would be happening. Computer A and B could be next to each other in the same room.

 

Has anyone seen this behaviour and can suggest some tests to run? Or can anyone suggest things I could be checking?

Hiya Gareth, non-technical papercutter here (fortunately I'm a Slack message away from the brainies in product and dev though). This sounds like a group policy issue, but my main question to you is - why not use Print Deploy to manage the deployment? I'm assuming you're using PaperCut MF so you should be able to dive into Print Deploy as part of your software licence: https://www.papercut.com/products/do-more/print-deploy/

We’ve also ditched GPP and are now using only Print Deploy to deploy printers. It sounds like we’re in a similar environment to you. All staff and senior student use Follow-Me printing, our Junior school student print directly to the printers. Give Print Deploy a go, see if it helps. Print Deploy also supports Windows Protected Print mode.

I ended up building my own bit of software to force printer to install (it runs via gpo on logon) - Happy to send you the Git and Docs if you want to have a look

 

 

As i had found first time a profile logs in on any semi complex GPO it can time out before it tries to add the printers.

I have found this to be a GPO And printer issue rather than anything to do with papercut

Have you tested whether GPP printer deployment works reliably for you under computer configuration? If so, then that would rule out DNS.

 

If it's patchy as you say, might that be due to computers not completing driver installation during user login?
