Probably been asked a million times before but I'm going to ask again anyway. Do you allow YouTube everywhere for all users? at the moment we only allow it for sixth form and gcse media students but as we can only filter by user and not device it causes problems when they are outside of the lessons they need it for. I know I can enforce restricted mode by modifying the header but I'm just wondering what everyone else is doing.

Restricted mode, restricted number of students, abuse it and lose it, block via classroom management tools when in other lessons

We block for most students.

Where we have exceptions it's only allowed during lesson time.

Free access for staff, allowed only by referrer header for pupils so that embedded videos play for other sites.

 

It is opened up on a schedule when asked for teachers for particular classrooms by a combination of Netsweeper and Impero.

 

Same for Vimeo or other video hosting platforms.

 

We are a High School with no sixth form.

Primary here, everyone has access.

 

Year 1 teachers would like some sort of control but apart from that it's down to the teachers to manage how the pupil access. We rely on kids telling on each other

Generally YouTube is unblocked across secondaries schools with smoothwall as it gives us the flexibility to content modify YouTube. Set to strict, safe search, comment removal etc.

I have one school who refuses to allow students on YouTube even with all the mods smoothwall offers

 

Primaries. Only teachers.

 

it’s easier to block the whole internet for kids and just have a custom whitelist of sites they can go on. Some schools only use like 50 websites the kids use.
