The UK's first "teacherless" GCSE class, using artificial intelligence instead of human teachers, is about to start lessons.

 

David Game College, a private school in London, opens its new teacherless course for 20 GCSE students in September.

 

The students will learn using a mixture of artificial intelligence platforms on their computers and virtual reality headsets.

 

No idea what systems are being used exactly. Quite a lot of sweeping statement and very little crunch in the article. A few other nice lines...

 

The students are not just left to fend for themselves in the classroom; three "learning coaches" will be present to monitor behaviour and give support.

 

"There are many excellent teachers out there but we're all fallible," said John Dalton, the school's co-principal.

 

"I think it's very difficult to achieve [AI's] level of precision and accuracy, and also that continuous evaluation."

 

The 20 students will pay around £27,000 a year.

Depressing.

 

This isn't being done to be better, it's being done to be cheap. "Let's teach our kids with AI!" - no, let's teach our kids with the best resources available.

I don't know what AI they have been using but I'm sure it is not the same one the rest of us have seen!

 

I don't understand this. Having three "learning coaches" means it's not about saving money, as that'd pay for a teacher capable of teaching a class of 20 kids.

A "teacherless" classroom, with three adults to 20 children? At least one of which is a former teacher, so presumably not on minimum wage...

I'd also be interested in what system this is. How many bets the 'AI' is actually just an algorithm programmed to assess and push them on to the next appropriate level?

I'm guessing that the 3 meat sacks aren't full time. No need to panic from our end, as they'll still need us to plug the equipment in and change the display properties etc etc etc.
