AV1 absence robot

Hi all..

 

Has anyone come across one of these and implemented them?

It's a little robot that sits in class and allows a remote student to interact as if they were in class.

 

I'm dubious but seeing if anyone has any experience with them?

Hi, we have one. The device is quite robust and can only be used by one device but it can be open to abuse as you don't know who else is watching on the remote device.

Yes, we have one at our school. Not sure how often it gets used but I know we had a bit of trouble getting it through our Smoothwall setup. I think it was as you can't install a certificate on it - we just put it on one of our Do Not Inspect policies in the end. Ours had a 4G connection as well so we took it on a tour of the site! I think teachers who do use it put it near the front of the class so they can hear/see the teacher well. Couldn't fault their support either.

Yeah my worry was getting it through Smoothwall, however if there's a way to do it, then that's fine. Cheers!

Yep we had one for a while for use with a student who had only passed through the doors a couple of times due to complex mental issues. It worked for a while with him but ultimately didn't lead to a successful reintegration. I dont think that was a lot to do with the tech.

It was a ok bit of kit, the council team involved sent it over to us to get set up so no idea on actual price.

 

Only one user phone/tablet app user can be locked to the device at one time so you can't use it for multiple students on a reduced timetable. I discovered in my testing and training with staff as we had to wait until my app was unregistered from the device for the student to use it.

 

Teachers said the reaction things were good feedback but a bit of the distraction for the rest of the class if its head suddenly lit up but got used to it after a while. A few times it did loose connection although I couldn't diagnose if it was his end, our end or just the student switching off.

 

I think its original design was for the likes of children unable to attend due to other reasons like chemo or other long term sickness and for those it would be great if they want to be in school but for a reason they cant.

We were loaned one by a hospital when one of our children was in for Chemo treatment. It was a pain to set up due to issues with proxies but when it was resolved it worked pretty well. It wasn't used a lot though.

We had one on trial and it worked fine and is very cute. I did not expect it to, but it actually freaked the other students in the room out.

We had one- surprised it didn't get booted across a playground...

Not sure how you get around the GDPR/ live streaming children issues however.

I'd probably want to see an independent security audit of the product, given the Meeting Owl debacle.
