Hi all

 

Spending a bit of time reviewing backups and wondering the step forward.

 

Currently we backup to System Center, a fileserver in another building, Wasabi and a Synology NAS drive. It's all very manual and a bit all over the place, so I am wanting a one stop shop really that backups one to many.

 

First thought is Veeam and just have multiple jobs however when I had a recent issue, the backup restore failed! So my faith has been hampered somewhat..

 

Can anyone recommend a nice streamlined service that will do this?

Veeam would be my option. I'd find out what the issue was with the restore and get that sorted. Veeam will give you all the options for GFS or copies and delete expired copies.

Used Veeam many times and a strong vouch for it. Restored AD objects back in version 6 when you had to create a Virtual LAB and restore Exchange and AD objects all the way to Version 9 at a previous place I really can't grumble. I've even had Veeam and VMWare on a call together with me to sort out an issue in the past. Edited by Davit2005

We use veeam for 1000+ servers and it’s great

 

If I remember correctly the community edition allows up to 10 hosts for free

 

The community edition was great, do they still offer it?

 

EDIT: Appears they do and you don't need to use PowerShell for scheduling anymore by the looks of it too :-)

Yes, I'm using it to back up my own servers - a basic Windows Server 2019 host with 3 VMs. The Community Edition handles the backups to local storage very nicely, but doesn't have the snazzy integrated scale-out repository facilities where it can integrate with cloud-based storage. However, I find a simple scheduled batch file that does a rclone sync once a day works just fine - I have my backups being synced to BackBlaze's S3-compatible storage, complete with 30-day immutability, and the 3 VM setup is costing around 90p a month to backup.

 

I've found Veeam's pricing for their full version to be quite fair and transparent. I tried to compare with other backup solutions of a similar feature-set and found I couldn't actually get pricing for any of them without registering / getting a formal quote / talking to sales. Veeam have their pricing right on their website. No backup solution, of course, is any use unless tested, and we've found that we can restore individual files easily enough (although it's always fiddly searching for the exact file you want) and whole VMs (one of our local file server managed to get deleted during a server re-arrange, we restored from Veeam with no problem, if rather slowly due to the size of the file server).

 

Admitedly, our future strategy would be to move away from using Veeam, but that's mainly because I'd quite like to get a simple all-in-one solution like one of the Synology devices that can handle both VM hosting and backups all on one dedicated bit of hardware. We currently have a Synology device backing up our Google Workspace instance, which seems to work well - we've used that recently to restore individual files and a whole user profile.

Beware of having all your eggs in one basket. The beauty of using VEEAM is that we can backup to a secondary QNAP, to a cloud service and to portable caddies that we keep offsite. All of these backups can be partially or fully immutable so that an attacker cannot delete them online.

I find VCC (Veeam Cloud Connect) really expensive for what it is tho - They charge per VM and the TB storage is really pricy.

Starting to look into using S3 Storage for this instead (Wasabi or Backblaze)

I'm about to press the trigger (once I wade through DPIA assessments) on Wasabi through AutoData who do 1TB for 5.99 (min 5TB.) monthly contract. Seems a blooming good deal to me.

Sorry to steal the thread - On the topic of backups, i'm looking for a new provider for an offsite backup. Currently have 1TB of storage with our current supplier at £150p/m, does this seem expensive?

er yes. multi regional archive shouldn't be more than £2 per TB per region

Ingress is free, egress is very expensive, like £50 per TB. If we need to recover then the company would pay without complaint.

Ah, Wasabi there are no costs either way. Plus the data doesn't get charged for 365 days, so the weekly backups won't cost me for a year.

 

It's an archive backup. You know the saying if your data isn't in three locations it may as not exist.

Snapshot every fifteen minutes, this is what's used for daily recovery tasks, as it's local.

Only the archive storage that needs to go offsite does, so that would be weekly diffs and monthlies.

We pay £6 per TB per month with Backblaze, with no minimum charge - I use it for my own servers too, and am paying around 90p per month.

Ah, is that via VCC? They used charge per VM on top of storage (I use them in another school I assist with)
