Essentially she's saying that she feels that the Gruffalo hogs a bit too much of the attention and that she likes it when people single out her other works and say that they're their favourites instead. Which I can kind of see, to be honest.

 

So with that in mind (and I appreciate this is one for more recent parents and grandparents here!), what would you say your favourite Julia Donaldson book is? I'd say either The Highway Rat or Room on the Broom.

My kids never had The Gruffalo, but loved Room On The Broom.

By far their fave was The Wolves In The Wall by Neil Gainman though.

Stick Man is my favourite of the ones that I'm reading to my little-uns each night. Zog is also a good-un.

 

The Gruffalo is an outstandingly good one, though. I think it's prominence is in part due to the title: it can't be confused with anything else, but is also a nice short title so as to fit on the ever-present "From the author of The Gruffalo" sticker. It can be read fast and lively, or you can slow it down towards the end to induce sleepiness in the child.

 

Julia Donaldson books tend to have an excellent flow when reading them, which is what sets them apart from other children's storybooks imho. The Gruffalo and Stick Man in particular.

 

Another favourite of mine is The Cat in the Hat, which is great fun to rattle off at speed.

My favourite and the kids is Tiddler but the best book by far is the Book with no pictures by B.J. Novak

We're currently going back through the Julia Donaldson back catalogue with my son now he is old enough to read them to us! Current favourites are Zog and Tabby McTat.

Zog is my favourite, but my son is loving Tabby McTat at the moment as it was on the TV at christmas.

When my kids were little I could read Stick Man word for word without looking at the book!
