Sorry, really basic Fibre cabling question...

if we have a 8 Core link back to our Backbone, from a Edge switch, should we be connecting all these 8 cores?

Currently we only have one of the cores connected?

All 8 should be terminated into the patch, but only 1 pair connected. (2 for redundancy maybe)

 

Rest are back ups

If you could use link aggregation it might be idea to use a couple of pairs. It's always worth running more than what you need in any case, the most expensive part is normally the labour in any cabling job. If one core does get broken you have another few pairs and future proofing. We normally have 4 or 8 pairs installed whenever we run a new cable minimum and sometimes more depending if it is a main comms and planning for diverse routes.

Remember that 8-core is only 4-pairs (4 usable connections).

 

We have two 1GB links active between all our cabs and core switch, except where our backup server etc are which had four 1GB links connected until we put in 10GB to there. Most cabs have two further spare links if one goes down for some reason.

If using 1GB links I would suggest link aggregating 2 or 4 connections if you have enough fiber/SFP ports, if using 10GB links then it's not really needed, 1x 10GB *should* be enough for most schools.

1 x 10GB link and 1 x 1GB failover link for us. Prevents against downtime due to faulting SFP or core switch as both links are served from different switches.
