Hello,

 

We have a HP 5412zl2 running as our Core switch. It has 2 PSU installed, During the half term i did some UPS testing and noticed that when we lose a UPS the core lose half its power. and same when the other UPS is tested.

 

Looking at the config - It doesn't look like redundancy has been setup

 

Does anyone know how to set this up?

As in the PoE loses it's power on half the switch or the modules lose power on half the switch where the PSU is?

 

We have no POE modules installed. - Just 10 x 1/10GB SFP+ and 1 24 port Ethernet installed (Non POE)

 

Modules lose power on half the switch.

I think this is 'a feature' it certainly was on our one. We just made sure to patch anything critical or that was also held up by UPS to the half of the switch that stayed up.

Yeah - It looks like its not been enabled. This is where I'm failing to get it enabled. It looks like it load balanced rather than being set to redundancy.

I can't be sure but I think you need 3 PSUs to have redundancy on the 5412zl.

 

Because the switch can run on a single supply, removing a redundant supply

will not interrupt switch operation. However, on the 5412zl one power supply

will only supply enough power to run the module slots A-F. Slots G-L will not

receive any power unless there are at least two power supplies installed. For

On my 5412zl I was running 2 x 48 POE ports and 1 x fibre and 1 x 10-GBE and 2 x PSU was not enough I had to order the full 4.

 

The switch stayed up then!

 

I wouldn't have expected you to need 4 if your not running any POE though. Mind you it wasn't really explained simply anywhere that I could find at the time.

I can't speak to the 5412 but i seem to recall the older 8200zl had a split backplane, with two PSUs one on each you would loose half the switch if there was a power/psu failure. You needed 4 PSU if you wanted all ports to stay up.

 

The design being that you connected every host/switch to it via two routes, one on one backplane one on the other - thus losing half the switch wouldn't matter.
