what does this software do, i do not understand

What doesn't it do!. Basically it allows you to produce an acceptable use policy automatically. you can base the automation on a mixture of time and groupings. it can then record the response in several ways and you can set an automatic reponse.

have a lil look round the projects forum.

Looking great - I've shown the current version to a couple of schools we support, and they really like it. Just got to get them to finish their actual policies now :p

I forgot to mention, a new option is to disable the account in active directory if the user declines the policy. You can use that if you're feeling particularly nasty!

A good option but will probably lead to more work for the ICT Support team initially.

Looks great, i mentioned this to my line manager today as its something i need to get nailed down before the academy comes along.

Maybe an option would be (for ISA server users at least) to add the users to a security group which is denied access on the firewall if they decline the AUP. And remove them if they agree? That would be helpful to me at least.

Looking forward to testing this.

WOW! you have been putting some work in! Looking great!

Its been interesting to see AUP in action. It been qute funny the students that decline it by default!

As for some requests as its in development:

It would be great to have a custom message box dialogues that can be chosen to display after both 'accept' and 'deny' options.

It would also be great to choose an option on 'deny': Message, log-off, log-off and reshow AUP (so decline logs off again), limit account, nothing etc.

The short answer is "quite some time". I know a lot of summer builds are done right around now but I won't be finished in time for that.

Realistically, late October / early November is my target. It's a busy time for me as I'll be off to uni at the start of October and that'll put a spanner in the works for sure. Worst of all, when I leave I won't have a network to test on!

I've been taking feedback into account as I work. I forget who requested being able to move users between groups but that's in now.

To give you an idea of where I've got to, here's roughly where each component stands:

  • Client Interface - 80%
  • Config backend - 25%
  • AD backend - 25%
  • Mail backend - 100%
  • Network backend- 50%
  • Reports - 10%

nice work.

I'll have a crack at setting up the old version this week then as i need something for the new year 7s in september and new staff. Any detailed instructions on how the best way to set it up?

cheers

I'll be sure to send you a beta version as soon as I get to that stage. In the meantime, I've finished work on the client interface which I think is a big improvement.

If anyone wants to give feedback on it, now's the time. Check the blog post here for information and screenshots. Feel free to leave a comment there or post here, I'll check both.

To answer a couple of questions about the design:

  • Yes, it does add a transparent background
  • Yes, that can be disabled ;)
  • The titlebar message can be changed
  • The header image can't be changed yet. If this is something enough people want, I'll change that.

Woo hoo, looking a nice blend between XP and vista!

By the header image do you mean the 'acceptable usage policy'?

If so I would personally like to simply add 'School' to the font of it as many students just thought it was a normal/internet pop-up box and get rid of it straight away!

The header image is the vista-style aurora saying "Acceptable Usage Policy". At the moment the text is part of the image but it should be easy enough to change that in future.
